SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 747,096, dated December 15, 1903.
Application filed March 31, 1903- .To all whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that we, JOHN WARREN SMITH and GEORGE UPTON HARN, Jr. citizens of the United States, residing atOolumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Printing-Rolls, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the art of printing, and in particular to that type of machine embodying printing and. impression rolls.
The object of the present invention is to provide an improved printing-roll wherein provision is made for the convenient setting up and changing of type thereon and for rigidly interlocking the type with the roll, so as to obviate looseness of the former under the action of the operation of the roll.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

At regular intervals the projected portions of the heads are provided with corresponding wedgeshaped openings 6, there preferably being four such openings in each head. Adjacent to each of the openings in one of the heads is a shoulder or abutment 7, which is preferably integral with the roll and has its outer 6o face flush with the outer periphery of the head, with one of its ends flush with the radial wall of the adjacent opening 6. Between each abutment 7 and the opposite head an electrotype 8 is fitted. This electrotype is designed to print a standard heading and may be changed whenever desired. A wedge-bar 9 is slid endwise through the adjacent opening in the head and has one end provided with a stud or projection 10 to take into the groove or 7c seat 5 of the opposite head, as best indicated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, thereby to prevent radial displacement of the bar. It will be understood that the engaging faces of the electrotype and the locking-bar 9 are at substantially right angles to the planes of the heads of the roll, while the opposite face of the 'bar is inclined and designed to bear against the correspondingly-inclined face of a wedge-bar 11, which has been previously introduced through one of the openings in the head and moved around into position for engagement by the locking-bar, it of course being understood that the bar 11 is provided at opposite ends with studs or projections for 8 5 engagement with the grooves or seats of the heads. To preventendwise displacement of the locking-bar 9, the outer face thereof is provided with transverse teeth or serrations 12,which are located opposite the abutment 7 and are engaged by the correspondinglytoothed under face of a spring-catch 13 in the form of a spring-plate secured at one end to the electrotype by means of a suitable fastening 14-. By reference to Fig. 2 it will be seen that one edge of theelectrotype is beveled transversely or undercut, with the adjacent faceof the locking-bar 9 correspondingly beveled. The same relation is present be- IOO Each of the individual type 15 is provided with a transverse groove 16 and is designed of said bars being provided with a terminal projection 18 at opposite ends to engage the grooves of the heads 2 and also provided with a longitudinal rib 19 to engage the grooves of the type, and thereby prevent radial displacement thereof. Where it is desiredito have a longitudinal space between adjacent rows of type, suitable spacing-blocks 20 are interposed between adjacent type-bars, and these blocks of course have a tongue-and; groove connection with said bars.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is 1. A printing-roll, having opposite headsbfn greater diameter than the body of the roll, and provided with inwardly-directed cy1indrical flanges spaced from the periphery of the roll,the spaces between the periphery of the roll and the flanges formingfannular seats or grooves, type-locking bars to fit between the flanges of the heads and provided with opposite terminal reduced projections to enter the grooves of the heads, the projected portions of one of the heads being provided with an opening for the endwise insertion of the type-locking bars and intersecting the grooved and flanged portions of the head.
2. A printing-roll having opposite heads of greater diameter than the body of the roll and provided in their inner faces with annular corresponding grooves, one of the heads being provided with an opening in its projected portion, type-locking bars disposed between the heads and provided with terminal projectionsslidabl y received within the grooves, type held between the bars, and a wedge-bar driven through' the opening of one of the heads to bind the type-bars upon the type.
3. A printing-roll, having opposite peripheral flanges, one of which is provided with an opening, type-locking bars fitted between the flanges and having terminal slidable tongueand-groove connections therewith, type held between the bars, a wedge driven through the between the bars, and means carried by the roll and detachably connected to the wedge to prevent endwise displacement thereof.

A printing-roll, having opposite periph- .-.eral flanges, one of which is provided with an opening, an electrotype fitted between the flanges adjacent to the opening in one of the latter, type-locking bars fitted between the flanges and slidably connected thereto, type held between the bars, a wedge-bar driven through the opening in one of the flanges and bearing at one side against the electrotype and at its other side against the adjacent locking-bar, the outer face of the wedge-bar being provided with a tooth or serration, and a spring-catch carried by the electrotype and detachably engaging the toothed or serrated portion of the wedge-bar to prevent endwise displacement thereof.
6. A printing-roll, having opposite peripheral flanges provided in their inner faces with annular grooves, one of the flanges being provided with an opening, type-locking bars hav= ing terminal projections slidably engaging the grooves of the flanges, and also provided with longitudinal ribs or tongues, type held between the bars and provided with grooves receiving the ribs or tongues thereof, and a wedge-bar driven through the opening in one of the flanges to bind the locking-bars upon the type.
