PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE THOllIAS DRABBLE, OF SHEFFIELD, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO THE FIRM OF NEEDI-IAM, VEALL AND TYZAOK, LIMITED, OF
SHEFFIELD, ENGLAND.
CUTLERY AND METHOD OF MAKING SAME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 747,05 dated D m r 1903- Applioation filed March 7, 1903. Serial No. 146,683. (No model.)
To 00% whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE THOMAS DRAB- BLE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Shefiield, England,-have invented new and useful Improvements in Cutlery and Methods of Making Same, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful im provements in cutlerysuch as knives, forks, &c.and in the method of manufacturing the same.
The object of the invention is to construct an article of cutlery having a hollow handle which is formed of sections adapted to be cast in any suitable form and secured together.
A further object is to provide novel means for securing the handle to the body of the article of cutlery for which it is intended.
The invention consists in forming a tang at one end of the body of the article and in casting the sections which are adapted when brought together to constitute the handle of the knife. The tang is then secured to one of said sections by casting a bolster thereover and integral with one of the handle-sections, and subsequent to this operation the other section of the handle is soldered or otherwise secured in proper position to complete the article.
The invention also consists in the further novel construction and combination of parts of the device and in the several steps of the process or method of manufacturing the cutlery hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
I have shown the various steps in the manufacture of a knife in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 isa view showing in detail the several portions of the knife prior to the assembling thereof. Fig. 2 shows the tang of the knife-blade in position upon one end of one of the handle-sections and prior to the molding of the bolster. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the parts illustrated in Fig, 2 and showing in section the bolster in position between the blade and handle-section. Fig. 4 is a section through the handle and bolster after all of the parts have been assembled. Fig. 5 is an edge view of the knife, and Fig. 6 is view of the finished article.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, l is a knife-blade having a tang 2 at one end thereof and integral therewith. The handle is formed of two sections, one of which, 3, is larger than the other, which is indicated by the numeral 4:. Both of these sections are formed by casting them in suitable molds, and it is obvious that any desired raised designs may be formed upon the outer surfaces thereof. Each section has its inner face recessed, as shown at 6, and a groove 7 is arranged in said face between the recess and the edges of the handle. The grooves within the two sections are adapted to register when said sections are placed in position one upon the other, and by placing a solder within the grooves said sections will be firmly connected. The bolster 8 of the knife is molded or cast around the tang 2 and serves to connect said tang to the handles. The method of constructing this knife consists in first molding the two handle-sections with the desired designs upon their outer faces and then placing the section 3 and the tang 2 in a mold and casting the bolster 8 upon said tang and the end of section 3, there by socurelybinding said tang and the handle-section. The next step is to place solder or other material suitable for binding metal faces together within the grooves 7 and arranging the section; upon section 3. When the handle is heated, the solder will be melted and firmly bind the two parts together. In lieu of employing solder the edges of the handlesections may be fused together, or if said handle-sections are formed of hard rubber the same may be vulcanized, as will be obvious. 'Also, if desired, the groove 7 may be dispensed with and solder placed between the adjoining faces of the sections. I do not restrict myself to any kind of material in the manufacture of these articles of cutlery. Furthermore, if desired, the tang 2 may be cast within the end of section 3 during the operation of molding said section.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that a plan modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. The herein-described method of manufacturing cutlery consisting in first producing the body of the article with a tang at one end thereof, then molding handle-sections, placing the tang against one end of one of said sections and casting a bolster therearound and upon said end, and finally securing the sections of the handles together.
2. The herein-described method of manufacturing an article of cutlery consisting in producing the body of the article with a tang at one end, casting handle-sections with recessed inner faces, placing the tang against one end of one of said sections, and casting a bolster around the tang and upon said end, and finally securing the handle-sections together.
3. The herein-described method of producing articles of cutlery having hollow handles consisting in first producing the body of the article with a tang at one end thereof, casting handle sections with recessed inner faces, placing the end of the tang against one end of one of the handle-sections and casting a bolster around the tang and upon said end, placing a fusible binding material upon the inner faces of the handle-sections, and finally placing said sections together and beating them.
4. The herein-described method of producing articles of cutlery having hollow handles consisting of constructing the body of the article with a tang at one end thereof, casting handle-sections with recessed inner faces and grooves within said faces, placing the end of thetangagainstonc end of one ofsaid sections, and casting a bolster therearound and upon the end of the sections, placing fusible material within the grooves and upon the inner faces of the sections, and finally joining the sections by heating the same and fusing the metal therebetween.
5. An article of manufacture comprising a body having a tang at one end thereof, a bolster inclosing and secured to said tang, ahandie-section integral with said bolster and having a recessed inner face and grooves in said face, a second handle-section having a recessed inner face and grooves in said face, and means for securingsaid sections together.
6. An article of manufacture comprising a body having a tang at one end thereof, handle-sections having recessed inner faces, said recesses being inclosed by grooves, fusible material within the grooves and adapt-ed to connect the handle-sections together and prevent independent lateral movement thereof, and a bolster inclosing the tang and adapted to secure the same to the handle-sections.
