MACl-HNE FOR MAKlNG ENVELOPS OR THE LIKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 747,021, dated December 15, 1903.
Application filed October 20, 1903. Serial No. 177,803. (No model.)
To (LZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADOLF TELLSOHOW, engineer, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at 27 Griinauerstrasse, Berlin, Germany, have invented certain new and useful:
opening through which the piece of material for forming the envelop or the like was pressed by a die. These four pieces or sections have each a bolt-like projection that can slide in a tubular guide, such motion being produced by a pin on the bolt being engaged in the cam-shaped slot in an annulus or ring, by the rotation of which the four angular pieces are consequently moved toward or away from' each other.
The present invention relates to means for actuating the four folding-flaps that are situated below the matrix-frame and which have to be adjusted in position in a corresponding manner to the adjustment of the four parts of the matrix-frame. vention the said foldingfiaps'are adjusted by a prescribed motion dependent upon the motion of the parts of the matrix-frame, for which purpose the said setting ring or annulus 2' is combined with a lower setting-ring, which is also provided with cam-slots, with which are engaged pins carried by guidebolts projecting from the fixed parts of the hinges of the folding-flaps. Thus when the setting-ring t is turned so as to move the parts of the matriX-frameto or from each other the lower setting-ring is moved simultaneously, so as to shift the fixed parts of the folding-flap hinges in a corresponding manner.
A construction according to the present invention is shown on the accompanying drawings, in which-- matrix-frame.
According to this in- Figure 1 shows a plan, and Fig. 2 a side view, partly in section. I
it, Fig. 1, are the two halves of the abovementioned setting-ring having the cam-slots 7t It, with which engage the pins 6 on bolts (Z, sliding radially in tubular guides g, Fig. 2. Below the ring t is the cylindrical piece f, on
the lower end of which is mounted the annulus or ring 1, which has four cam-slots 2, Fig. 1, similar to those of-ring i. This ring. 1 is fixed rigidly to 2' by means of pillars 3, so that both rings move together.
Below the ring 1 is a cylindrical piece 4 similar to f, on which are formed four radiallyprojecting guide-tubes 5. In these guides slide bolts 6, having vertical pins 7, which engage with the slots 2 of the ring 1, so that on turning the latter the bolts 6 will be shifted either inwardly or outwardly, and this motion serves, as above stated, to shift the folding-flaps 8 simultaneously with the sections a of the matrix-frame. The folding-flaps 8, as shown at Fig. 2, do not consist of angular pieces like the parts 66 of the matrix-frame, but only have a flat surface, each of which corresponds to one of the four sides of the While, therefore, the parts of thellatter require to move in a diagonal direction relatively to the opening of the frame, the four folding-flaps move, respectively, parallel to one side of the said opening.
In consequence hereof the guide-bolts 6 lie at an angle of forty-five degrees to the guidebolts-d of the matrix-frame. The setting-ring i is divided into two separate halves, so that on moving them apart rectangular forms for the envelops can be produced irrespective of the shifting of the angular pieces a relatively to each other, and in order to retain this advantage the second ring 1 also requires to be divided, this being efiected, as shown in the lower part of Fig. 2, by making the division through two of the slots 2. M
The adjusting of the foldingflaps 8 by means of the guide-bolts 6 is eftectedl as follows: On the under side of the table 9, Fig. 2, of the machine there are fixed tubular guides 10, similar to the guides 5, in which slide guide-bolts 11. The outer end of each of these bolts 11 is connected by a flat bar 12 with the outer end of the corresponding bolt 6 by means of screws, so that each pair of bolts 6 and 11 must move together. As shown at Fig. 2, the bolts 11 carry on their inner ends one of the fixed parts of the folding-flap hinges, to which the folding-flaps proper, 13, are pivotally connected, the flaps 13 being actuated in any suitable manner.
The action of the above-described arrangement will be readily understood. If the ring '5 be turned, the ring 1 turns with it. The pins 7 move in the slots 2 of the ring 1 and carry the bolts 6 with them, which in their turn move the bolts 11 and with them the hinge parts 8 of the folding-flaps. If the form of the envelop to be folded is to be altered by moving apart the two halves of the ring 71, the pins 7 (shown at top and at bottom of Fig. 1) would lose their guiding-support, because the two halves of the ring 1 would also be moved apart, and consequently the two corresponding slots 2 would be opened out. In order, notwithstanding this, to insure the correct position of the two corresponding folding-flaps, their bolts 6 are secured to their tubular guides 5 by means of small setting-screws 14 or the like.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is- 1. The combination of a matrix-frame for an envelop or similar machine consisting of a plurality of sections adjustable relative to each other to vary the size of the opening in the frame, means for simultaneously adjusting said sections and maintaining them in adjusted position, a plurality of folding-flaps situated below the matrixframe and means for adjusting said folding-flaps simultaneouslywith said sections and maintaining them in adjusted position, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
