To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN STOOKDALE SPEN- OER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Oripplecreek, in the county of Teller and State of Colorado, have invented a new and Improved Front Cylinder-Head for Rock- Drills, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to rock-drills driven by compressed air, steam, or other fluid; and its object is to provide a new and improved front cylinder-head arranged for convenient, quick, and secure attachment to and easy removal from the cylinder without disturbing the other parts of the machine.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts inall the views.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improvement as applied and showing the head partly removed. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan View of the same'on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged front elevation of the body member of the improvement. Fig. sis a sectional plan view of the improvement on the line 4 4. of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the improvement as applied and in position on the cylinder-head.
The cylinder-head shown in the drawings consists, essentially, of a body member A, a closing member B, and keys 0 for firmly uniting the members, as hereinafter more fully described. The cylinder-head is formed with a longitudinal bore for the passage of a piston-rod D, and the said cylinder-head is preferably made conical and provided on its base or inner end with an annular oifset E, fitting a corresponding recess in the front end of a cylinder F, as plainly shown in Fig. 5, and in order to securely hold the cylinder-head in position on the cylinder F the side bolts Gr thereof engage open ears H, formed integrally on the sides of the body member A at or near the base end thereof. The pistonrod bore in the cylinder-head is partly formed in the body member A and partly in the closing member B, and theisaid body member A is formed with a longitudinally-extending slot or recess leading to the said partial bore in the body member, in which recess fits the closing member B, the recess having shoulders I on opposite sides of the bore for the inner ends of the closing member B to rest on when driven by the keys O. The keys 0 extend transversely through lugs A and B in the members A and B, as plainly shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 4:, to securely unite the members A and B With each other to allow the operator on the removal of the keys to take the member B out of the recess of the body member A, so that the latter can be lifted 0d the piston-rod D without disturbing any of the parts of the machine, it being understood that the ears H are open in the same direction as the body member A, so as to readily disengage the ears H from the bolts G when it is desired to remove the body member A from the machine.
By reference to Fig. 1 it will be seen that in order to remove the head from the cylinder F the nuts on the bolts G are first loosened to allow of slipping the cylinder-head outward on the piston-rod D 'to disengage the annular offset E from the recess in the end of the cylinder F. When this has been done, the keys O are removed to allow of disengaging or removing the member B from the member A, and the latter can now be lifted off the piston-rod D. On removal of the cylinder-head, as described, ready access is had to the cylinder for repair of packings, piston, and the like, as the case may be.
In replacing the piston-head on the cylinder-head the above-described operation is repeated, only in reverse order-that is, the member A is first placed in position on the piston-rod, with the ears H engaging the bolts G, and then the member B is placed in position on the member A and the keys 0 driven home, after which the head is slipped inward to engage the offset E with the recess in the outer end of the cylinder F. The
nuts on the bolts G are now screwed up to securely fasten the cylinder-head in position on the cylinder F.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A cylinder-head having abody member formed with a longitudinal recess, the inner portion of which is approximately semicircular, to fit onto the piston-rod, the outer portion being wide, and its side walls forming shoulders with the sides of the inner portion, a closing member fitting into the outer portion of the recess and seated on the said shoulders,the inner face of the closing member being approximately halfround, to fit the piston-rod, and means for driving the closing member home in the said body member, as set forth.
2. A cylinder-head having a longitudinal bore for the passage of the piston-rod, the said head having two members, each having approximately a half portion of the bore, one member being the body member and formed with a longitudinal recess having straight side walls leading to shoulders on opposite sides of the bore, and the other or closing member fitting the recess and adapted to be seated at its inner ends on the said shoulders, and keys transversely driven through the said members, to securely fasten the same together, as set forth.
3. A cylinder-head having a longitudinal bore for the passage of the piston-rod, the said head having two members, each having approximately a half portion of the bore, one member being the body member and formed with a longitudinal recess having straight side walls leading to shoulders on opposite sides of the bore, and the other or closing member fitting the recess and adapted to be seated at its inner ends on the said shoulders, keys transversely driven through the said members, to securely fasten the same together, and exterior ears integral on the sides of the body member, to engage the side bolts of the cylinders, the said ears being open in the same direction as the body member, as set forth.
