to make of a rounded contour throughoutits entire upper surface.
I refers to a vertical guide consisting of a strap of metal bent to form the forward horizonml upper portion extending above the lever to limit the npwnrd movement thereof.
From the description thus far it will be comprehended that in running the car the motor-man occupies a position with one foot so ported upon the pedal Giso as to maintain the valve F closed and prevent the escape of air by way of the pipe E. Nowif for any reason the pedal G should be relieved from foot-pressure the air in the pipe E will oporetc to unseat the valve F and escape to the atmosphere, and thus result in the setting of the brakes. The slot g in the lever G provideo for a varying engagement between the valve-stem end said lever due to the changing position of the lever in its pivotal movements. It will be ohvions. However, that the unseating movement of the alve being in a direction at an angle to that in which the slot extends will'elwcys permit the actuation of the valve without enabling the pressure of the airto undesirably unseat the some. With a view of insuring the valve l seating airtight and avoiding tiny grinding of the valve due to undue pressure on the fooi-lever I prefer that said valve shall be of yielding meterial or at least have yieldingbeziringlaces.
"A plug-valve B ,inte1'pose(l in the trainline pipe near the coupling B, provides for cutting out the pipe and its auxiliary valve when desired.
From the foregoing it will be readily appreciated that my improved device is not only highly useful and simple, but it comhines with the ordinary brake apparatus an element of safety, highly desirable particularly in the matter of electricmotor cars. The ronnded contour of the upper portion of the pedal G necessitates n certain amount of care on the pert of iheinotornmn inorder to properly maintain his foot thereon. Consequently if such motor-men should become suddenly ill or otherwise incopcciieted the rounded contour referred to would the more readily insure his foot slipping from the pedal, and thereby occasion the application of the brake. Ordinarily the weight of the leg and foot of the motornlan Will be sullicienl to keep the valve closed against the train-line pressure Without requiring special effort on the part of the motormen.
I do not desire tobe understood as limiting myself to the precise construction and arrangement of parts shown and set forth, but reserve the right to such modifications as comprising a branch pipe communicating with the train-line pipe and with the stance pliers, said branch pipe having lower arranged in a plane hot-ween (he pressure and trein dine pipes and centignous to the liooiys valve interposed in said lower bend and seated in opposition to the pressure of theeir in the branch pipe, e lever opercti ely cor.- nected with said val ve and extendin" between the pressure and train-line pipes, said lever being depressible solely by e. foot-pedal.
3. A 'sefety device for air-brake iiponratue, comprisinge branch pipecoininnnieeticghoth with the ti-eiwline pipe and the atmosphere, and having 2.- lower bend located contiguous to the lloor, a, Volvo interposed in said bend and provided with a, yielding sectengeging surface, and a lever for closing said valve and provided with s. foot-pedal.
A safety device for einbralreepperetns, comprising lorsnch pipe commnniceting with both the train-line pipe and. the atmosphere, sold branch pipe including elowerbend contiguous. tofthe door, a, valve located in said bend and seating in opposition to the pressure of the air in said branch pipe, and a.
lever for closing said valve and provided with pedal having no upper rounded surface. 5. A safety devicefor zii r-bmlre apparatus, comprising in branch pipecom mnnicntingooth with the train-line pipeend the stniosohere, sold branch pipe including on lower bend c intiguous to the floor, a valve interposed in said bond and seating in opposition to the air in said branch pipe, n pivoted lever having a slot, and a, pin within said slot end'con nected with the vclveetem.
Signed at city of New York, in the county of New York end State of New York, this 7th day of July, A. i). 1903.
