From the description thus far it will be comprehended that in running the car the motor-man occupies a position with one foot so ported upon the pedal Giso as to maintain the valve F closed and prevent the escape of air by way of the pipe E. Nowif for any reason the pedal G should be relieved from foot-pressure the air in the pipe E will oporetc to unseat the valve F and escape to the atmosphere, and thus result in the setting of the brakes. The slot g in the lever G provideo for a varying engagement between the valve-stem end said lever due to the changing position of the lever in its pivotal movements. It will be ohvions. However, that the unseating movement of the alve being in a direction at an angle to that in which the slot extends will'elwcys permit the actuation of the valve without enabling the pressure of the airto undesirably unseat the some. With a view of insuring the valve l seating airtight and avoiding tiny grinding of the valve due to undue pressure on the fooi-lever I prefer that said valve shall be of yielding meterial or at least have yieldingbeziringlaces.

From the foregoing it will be readily appreciated that my improved device is not only highly useful and simple, but it comhines with the ordinary brake apparatus an element of safety, highly desirable particularly in the matter of electricmotor cars. The ronnded contour of the upper portion of the pedal G necessitates n certain amount of care on the pert of iheinotornmn inorder to properly maintain his foot thereon. Consequently if such motor-men should become suddenly ill or otherwise incopcciieted the rounded contour referred to would the more readily insure his foot slipping from the pedal, and thereby occasion the application of the brake. Ordinarily the weight of the leg and foot of the motornlan Will be sullicienl to keep the valve closed against the train-line pressure Without requiring special effort on the part of the motormen.
