SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 746,831, dated December 15, 1903.

To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK HAYDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Acornridge, in the county of Stoddard, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Brakes; and I do hereby declare the following to boa full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to wagon-brakes in general, and more particularly to the class of automatic brakes; and it has for its object to provide a construction wherein a windingdrum will be automatically clutched to the hub of a wagon-wheel to wind up and place under tension the operatingcable connected to a brake-beam, the clutch being operated when the wagon is traveling downhill and being thrown out of action when the wagon is on a level.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure l is a top plan view of a runhing-gear of a wagon equipped with a brake mechanism embodying the presentinven tion. Fig. 2 is a view showing a portion of the rear axle in elevation and illustrating the clutch mechanism and the wheel in action, the mechanism for operating the clutch, together with the brake-drum, being in elevation. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of an upright of the rear bolster and the pendulum carried thereby. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the pend ulum.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown the running-gear of a wagon comprising front and rear axles l0 and 11, having wheels 12 and 13, respectively, the axles being connected by the ordinary reach-bar 14. For the rear wheels is provided a brake 15, including a transverse brake-beam having shoes at its ends for direct engagement with the tires of the wheels, and this brake-beam is connected by means of a rod 16 with a brakelever 17, which is pivoted to the rear portion of the running-gear. The hub 18 of one of the rear wheels is provided with an encircling band 19 at its inner end, from which project pins 20, which slidably engage perforations 21 in the web portion 22 of a clutch-ring 33, which is rotatably mounted upon the spindle of a cable 28, which extends forwardly and is attached to the brake'lever, so that when the clutch members are in frictional engagement the winding-dru m will rotate with the wheel to wind the cable upon the drumand operate the brake-lever.

ring, a lever 28 is provided, the lower end thereof being forked and embracing the spindle at the rear of the winding-drum, the lower end of this lever being pivoted to a block 29, which is located below the spindle and with which is engaged an adj listing-screw 30, which is screwed through the depending lug 30, so that when the screw is turned in one direction or the other the block 29 will he moved toward or away from the drum 27 to correspondingly move the fulcrum of the lever 28. The lever carries rollers 31, disposed for contact with the adjacent end of the windingdrum when the lever is correspondingly moved and press the winding-drum with its clutch member to engage the clutch-faces.
To operate the lever 28 automatically when the wagon descends a grade, the bolster 32 of the running-gear has an upright 33, provided with a forwardly-directed bracket 34 on its front face, and to the upper end of which bracket is pivoted a two-part pendulum-arm comprising members 35 and 36, connected by means of a hinge 37, so that the lower member may be swung transversely of the wagon. The upper member of the pendulum-arm has an opening through which is passed an arc-shaped guide-bar 38, attached to thebolster, and in the opening of the pendulum-arm at the sides of the guide-bar are friction-reducing rollers 39. On the rear face of the upright 33 is slid ab-ly mounted a wedge 40, in contact with the lever 28, and attached to this wedge is a cord 41, which is passed upwardly and then forwardly through a per- IOO foration 42 in the upright and attached to the upper member of the pendulum arm. When the vehicle starts downhill, the pendulum swings forwardly, so that the cord is placed under tension and draws the wedge upwardly to crowd the lever 28 laterally and press its rollers against the end of the winding-drum, so that the clutch member is engaged operatively with the clutch ring. When the wagon reaches a level, the upright and pendulum-arm regain their parallel relations, so that the wedge is permitted to move downwardly and release the lever 28. The clutch-faces are then permitted to separate or resume their normal positions.
With the hinge connection of the members of the pendulum-arm thelower member thereof, which carries the weight, may hang vertical, even when one side of the vehicleis higher than the other, so that the friction between the pendulum-arm and its guide-bar does not reach that point which will interfere with the movement of the pendulum to raise the wedge or lower it.
It will be understood that in practice modifications of the specific construction shown may be made and that any suitable materials and proportions may be used for the various parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Attached to the lower end of the pendulum is a cord 50, which passes forwardly and upwardly through a perforation in the upper end of the forward standard 51 of the wagon, and attached to this cord at opposite sides of the standard are cross-bars 52 and 53. If the cross-bar 53 at the extremity of the cord is pulled, the pendulum will be swung to set the brakes, as above described, the cross-piece 52 acting to prevent the cord from being drawn too far. When the driver leaves the wagon, he may attach the reins to the front cross-piece, so that if the horses start they will pull on the cord and set the brakes.
What is claimed is 1. In a vehicle, the combination with a wheel-hub having a clutch member, of a second clutch member for engagement with the first-named clutch member, a brakeshoe, means connected between the brake-shoe and the second clutch member and operable from the latter when in active position to operate the brake-shoe, an operating-lever for the second clutch member, the lower portion of said lever being forked, rollers attached to said forked portions'adapted to engage the outer face of the second clutch member, a
v spindle on which the wheel-hub is mounted,
a slide mounted upon the under side of the spindle ot' the vehicle and pivoted to the forked portion of the said lever, an adjusting-screw attached to the spindle and engaging the slide for shifting it and therefore the fulcrum of the lever, a pendulum suspended from the vehicle and means connected with the pendulum for operating and releasing the lever as the pendulum swings.
2. In a vehicle, the combination with' a wheel-hub having a clutch member, of a second clutch member for engagement with the first-named clutch member, a brake-shoe, means connected between the brake-shoe and the second clutch member and operable from the latter when in active position to operate the brake-shoe, an operating-lever for the second clutch member, a pendulum suspended from the vehicle, a wedge slidablymounted on the vehicle and engaging the said lever and means connected with the pendulum for operating the wedge as the lever swings.
3. In a vehicle, the combination with a wheel-hub having a clutch member, of a second clutch member for engagement with the first-named clutch member, a brake-shoe, means connected between the brakeshoe and the second clutch member and operable from the latter when in active position to operate the brake-shoe, an operating-lever for the second clutch member,a pendulum suspended from the vehicle, said pendulum being formed of upper and lower sections hinged together, an opening in the upper section, friction-reducing rollers attached to the sides of said opening, an arc-shaped guide attached to the vehicle and adapted to pass through 9 the opening in the pendulum in contact with the said rollers, and means connected with the pendulum for operating and releasing the lever as the pendulum swings.
4. In a vehicle, the combination with a wheel-hub having a clutch member, and an annular flange between the hub and said clutch member of a rotatable winding-drum having a clutch member for engagement with the member of the hub, means for engaging the clutch members, a brake mechanism including a beam and an operating-cable connected with the winding-drum and with the brake-beam.
