POSTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 746,794, dated December 15, 903- Application filed May 9, 1901. Serial no. 59,468. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LU CIEN COULET, residing at St. Etienne, Loire, and PIERRE P0- MEoN, J osnrn PoMEoN, and ANTOINE Po- MEON, residing at St. Chamond, Loire, France, citizens of the Republic of France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Posters and the Like, (which has been patented to us in France under No. 304,837, filed October 20, 1900; in Belgi11n1,No.152,680, October 20, 1900, and in England, No. 19,060, filed October 24, 1900,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention proved system of posters whereby the same are adapted to cover more or less ground, ac-
cording to the space available, without requiring difierent-sized posters for difierentsized fields of space. It being granted .that a poster on a large sheet or of large size attracts more attention and is a better advertisement than a small poster, or even a succession of small posters pasted side by side, and as, on the other hand, the production of a large sheet of printing is very costly, and,
further, sufficient space for the exhibiting of a large poster is notalways at disposal, which necessitates an advertiser employing various types of advertisements of various sizes, we have sought and found an improved solution of the problem of manufacturing with economy in printing a poster, which may be large or small, as desired, and which may, in fact, be proportioned to the space at disposal.-
Figure 1 shows 7 the poster elongated by means of one intermediate piece. Fig. 2 shows the two pieces, one of which will serve either as an intermediate piece or an ending.
The poster or like advertisement is composed of two rectangular pieces, one, a, of which composes a picture or design complete in itself and surrounded on all four sides by a border. The other, I), is a design surrounded on three sides by a border and is adapted to be partially superposed on the first piece a, and, further, similar pieces I) may be similarly overlapped on the second piece, as shown in Fig. 1, this third piece serving as an end and conceal the bordenstripc.
has. for its object an im'-.
piece. Thus is formed a larger complete design than any of the pieces and surrounded by a single and continuous border. The detail of operation is as follows: The first end piece a, is first pasted up. The border at c thereon at the right edge need not be out off; but a piece 6 may be applied, so as to overlap ber of other pieces Z7 may be successively applied in like manner, and the last piece applied rnay always be the end piece. The dotted line on the piece a and on the piece b simply represents about how much one piece may overlap theother.
We claim as our invention 1. A poster or like advertisement composed of two or more pieces of which one composes a picture or design complete in itselfand is surrounded by a complete border, and the others of which are each provided with a partial border and so designed that when lapped successively one over the other a'complete design surrounded by a single border is formed with each successive addition.
2. A poster or like advertisement composed of two or more rectangular pieces, one of which composes a picture or design complete in'itself and surrounded on all four sides by a border, and the others of which are identical partial designs each surrounded on three sides by a border and adapted to be partially superposed on the first piece and on each other,so as with each successive addition to obscure a portion of the previous border and form a larger complete design surrounded by a single and continuous border, substantially as described.
In witness whereof we have hereunto signed our names, this 23d day of April, 1901, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
