METHOD OF FINISHING METAL ARTICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 746,724, dated. December 15, 1903.
I Application filed January 5, 1903.
. To all whom 2325 may concern:
Be it known that LOHARLOTTE R.MANNING, of Meriden, in the county of New'Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Methods of Finishing Metal Articles; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1, a side view of a vessel having a primarily-coated exterior surface; Fig. 2, a broken sectional view of the same, showing the interior lining and final exterior finish.
This invention relates to a method of finishing the surfaces of metal articles for various purposes, and is particularly intended for finishing the surfacesof porcelain or enamel lined vessels. For many articles of tableware it is desirable to have a porcelain lining with a silver-plated exterior; but firing the articles after coating the interior causes scales to form on the exterior surface, so that great difficulty is experienced in producing a sulficiently smooth surface to plate, for no matter how fine a polish may be given an article hefore firing it will scale to a greater or less exof nickel, copper, or other material, by elec- Y troplating. The interior of the Vessel is then Serial No. 137,794. (No model.)
given an enamel'lining C of so-called granite or porcelain ware, and then fired to set the lining. After firing, the exterior surface is removed with a grinding or polishing wheel or by acids and polished forthe final .finish D, of nickel, silver, or other material,
Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I l. The herein-described method of finishing surfaces of metal requiring firing consisting in primarily plating the metal, then firing and then removing the primary plating for subsequent finishing, whereby the formation of scales by firing is avoided, substantially as described.
2. The herein-described method of finishing metal articles which required firing, consisting in primarily plating the exterior surface and lining the interior surface, then firing to set the lining, then removing the primary plating and polishing preparatory to replating and finishing the surface, substantially as described. T
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLOTTE R. MANNING.
