To ALL WHoM ITMAY coNcERN:
Be it known that we LEwIs Down and ARUNA G. CoLroN, of Sycamore, in the county o f DeKalb, and State of Illinois, have invented a new' and improved Heat-Deieotor;' and we do'hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,- and exact description'thereo', which will enable those skilledin the art to make and use the same, reference being had to tho accompanying drawings forming part of this specication. This invention -relates vto an improvement inthe constructionA of heat-radiating drums ortubes, fofthe'conveyance of heated air or the productsV of combustion from stoves, or heating-furnaces, or res,in all siti1ations, `y and the 'invention consists in arranging 'a series of adjustable. slats within the drum or tube, hy Whichthe curf rent of heated air -or gases from the fire orair-cha'mbcr' may bei-deflected and' retarded in their 'ciou'rsegaud thereby compelled to part with their contained caloric, as will behefeinai'ter more fully described.
Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section ofarectangular-shaped drum with ourdeiiecting-arrangement attached, the same presenting a front view on the linea" rv.
Figure? is also a longitudinal side view, partly in section, showing the devicefor adjusting` the deilectingslats.v
Similar lettersof reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the drum; B represents Vthe slats. The slat which is marked B hasashank or elongated,
pivot. atene end, which passes `through the sident' lthe drum, to which is attached an arm, marked C. To the inner'side of the arm -Cither'e a small spring, a, attached, (seen in dotted lines lin iig. 2;)'the outer end of which is turned at aA right angle, and passes .through the outer vendv of tl1e arm, with aiknob--on it, as seen at e.
F issegment on the outer 'iside of the drum, with its 'edge serrated or notched, as seen 'in the drawing, withV Awhichnotches the spring engagemas the arm is moved back and fdrth for the adiustment of the-slats B. The slats are connected together, as seen in the drawing, after the mannenof the .adjustable window-blinds of dwellinghouses, so that by moving the'slat B', all the slats receive avcor'respondingmotion, andare openedor closed,
and adjusted as may be desired, by operating the arm Cover the segment F. -In Width, the slats are designed to lill or nearly ll the drum, as-seen in 2.v- In length, as seen in fig. 1,-tl1ey are shorter'than the width of the drumpand are so placed that when closed, as seen in iig. 2, the current of heated air or gasesis compelled to pass alternately/*back and forth within the drum, as indicated by the arrows, thus deiiecting the current from its direct path, and compelling it to travel a long distance through the drum, forthe more eiectual radiation of the 4heat containodin said current. By properly adjusting theslats, and xing'them,'by means of the arm (E, in any' given position, the draught may loe regulated asmay be desired.
This dellector is adapted to 'all situations where it is desired to regulate 'the liow of heated currents, and thereby utilize the heat. 'g Y l Y l Having thusdescribed our invention, we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-g l. In a heat-deflector, thepivoted slats B B', in' combination with a. casing, A, when said slats are connected together,l and are combined with a device for securing them fin position, substantially as Vdescribed,'for the pur-l pose set forth.
2. In combination with a heat-deflecting drum', we claim the combination of the armv C, .the spring a, and
the segmentF, substantially as and for the purposes described. v The above specication of ou'r invention signed by'us, this second day. of December, 1867. A
