Be it known that I, GEORGE W. DONNING, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,
which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invent-ion relates to an improved typebar carrying a multiple typehead for typewriting machines which shall be compact, durable in construction, and certain in operation.
My invention further relates to a construction in which interference orimpact between descending and ascending type-heads will cause the ascending type-head to shift sufficiently to preventinterlocking and jamming of such interfering type-heads, while the deagainst shifting thereby.
Myinvention further relates to an improved actuating mechanism for typo-bars.
My invention consists in the constructions, combinations, and arrangements herein described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application, and in which similar reference-symbols indicate corresponding parts in the several views, Figure l is a sectional elevation of a type-writing machine, illustrating one form of myimproved typebar and its actuating means. Fig. 2 is a detail elevation, on a larger scale, of a typebar and its key mechanism shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a preferred construction of typebar. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the type-ban' Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view showing a preferred form of multiple type-head. Referring especially to Figs. 1 and 2 of the.
drawings, in which I have illustrated a fiatplaten or book type-writer, A indicates a typebarof any desired shape, pivotally carrying a multiple type head (r shown provided with three type-holders or, and with a rearward extension a. A serrated link a is shown pivotally'connected to the extension at and to a rock-arm a, which latter is pivotally carried on the type-bar. The link a is provided with an actuating-tailpiece a ,constructed to engage a shiftable member 0 upon movement of the type-bar. A spring member 0. is secured to the type-bar in position to engage the serrations of link a and positively lock said link in its adjusted position. This spring member a is preferably constructed with a slotted portion to receive the link a and with a rearward-extending portion 0, arranged to engage a type-head releaser (1 when the type-bar is in its upward normal position. A spring a carried by the type-bar, is shown connected to the rock-arm a and acts to return the type-head to its normal position when the spring member a is released from engagement with the serrated link a l.
The lower end of the type-bar is pivoted at n in a guide-yoke a shown secured to a base-plate B by a screw b. This guide-yoke is preferable to the usual pivot or cone-bearing support in that it prov-ides a broad guiding-surface for the type-bar throughout the latters entire arc of movement, thus preventing lateral play of the type-bar with slight friction. A rod or link 0. x is shown connecting a toe a on the type-bar with the inner arm of a key-lever D. Suitable means, such as a turnbuckle, may be provided foradjusting the length of the rod a. A spring 0 connecting the inner end of the key-lever with the type-head releaser, acts to return said key-lever to its normal position upon its release.
The guide-yoke may carry a resilient memher 0/23, as shown in Figs. 6 and 6, in position to engage the type-bar upon movement of the latter, and thereby prevent the type from striking the platen with a jarring action. The resilient member (L23 acts also to produce quick return of the type-bar to its normal position by engagement with the forward face of the tailpiece of the type-bar.
If desired, I may provide the guide-yoke with a stop-or abutment a, as shown in Fig. 7, against which the type-bar will strike on its return to normal position.
The actuator for operating the actuatingtailpiece (L13 preferably comprises a shiftable segmental bar 0, carried by hangers or rods 0, which latter are guided in openings formed in the base-plate B and type-head releaser a or in any convenient portion of the typewriter frame.
A shaft 0 extending transversely of the type-writer, carries adjacent each end a bellcrank lever 0 one arm of each bell crank lever being connected to one of the hangers c. The other arm of each bell-crank lever is preferably connected by a link 0 to an arm 0 secured on a second transverse shaft 0 this second shaft carrying a crank 0 which is connected to one of the hangers a. An arm 0 is secured to the shaft 0 preferably near one end thereof, and pivotally supports two slotted links 0 0 A shift-key lever E for capital letters carriesa pin extending within the slot of the link 0 and a shift-key lever F for numerals and symbols carries a pin extending within the slot of the linkc the pin on the shiftlever F swinging on a larger radius than the pin of the cap-lever,as clearly shown in Fig.1.
It will be understood that upon actuation of the cap-key lever E the operating segmental bar 0 will be raised to its intermediary position and that upon actuation of the nu- Ineral-key lever F the segmental bar will be raised to its highest position. be clear that upon actuation of the cap-key lever the pin of the numeral-key lever will slide in its engaging slot, and vice versa, so that actuation of either of said shift-levers will in no manner affect the other. Upon release of the shift-levers the segmental bar and its attached parts may be returned to their normal lowest position by gravity or by a spring.
When it is desired to print a lower-case character, the key lever D is actuated to swing the type-bar downward and bring the lower-case type in contact with the paper. The segmental bar 0 being in its normal lowest position will not engage the tailpiece a to shift the type-head.
When an upper-case character is to be printed, the cap-lever E is actuated to shift the segmental bar 0 to its intermediary position. The key-lever D is thus actuated to swing the type-bar downward, whereupon the tailpiece a will engage the bar 0 and adjust It will further the type-head suficiently to bring the uppercase type into printing position. The spring member a, engaging the serrated link a positively locks the type-head in its adjusted position against turning movement in the direction of the hands of a Watch, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Upon release of the keylever D the type-bar returns to its normal upright position and the rearward projection a of the spring member contacts with the type-head releaser and forces the spring member from engagement with the serrated link a thus permitting the spring a to swing the typehead into its normal position. Should the bar 0 be in raised position during such return of the type-bar, the tailpiece Q will readily ride over the inclined face thereof.
If a nirmeral is to be printed, the numeral shift-key F is actuated to shift the segmental bar 0 to its highest position, whereupon during the downward swing of the type-bar the tailpiece (1 will engage the segmental bar and adjustthe type-head to bring the numeral-type into printing position, the spring member a positively locking the type-head in its adjusted position, as previously described.
While I have illustrated my invention applied to a type-head provided with three type, it is obvious that a greater or less number may be employed, if desired.
Fig. 5 illustrates a preferred construction of multiple type-head, which consists of the head propera aprovided with a plurality of type holders or sockets a", the head being provided with grooves or saw-cuts between the sockets, whereby the latter are rendered yielding and may be bent to position for proper alinement.
Fig. 8 illustrates a modified form of typebarand actuating mechanism in which a pawl 06 on the type-bar engages teeth 00 on the type-head to positively lock the latter in its several positions, a spring a being provided to maintain the pawl in engagement with said teeth. The pawl e is provided with a rearward-extending portion which is arranged to engage the type-head releaser when the type-bar is in its normal upright position, and thereby release the pawl from engagement with the teeth a The operating mechanism of the type-bar illustrated in Fig. 8 constitutes a lever c pivoted in a bearing 0 on the base-plate B and connected to the toe of the type-bar by a link 0", the link 0 being connected by a rod at with the inner end of a key-lever, as clearly shown. This construction obviates the employment of a bent rod a, as in the construction of Figs. 1 and 2, and also permits the use of a longer key-lever and insures an easier touch. If desired, the bearing 0 of the several typebar-actuating mechanisms may be formed in one continuous comb-like piece.
Fig. 9 illustrates a modified form of shiftable segmental bar 0 in which a frictionbearing, such as a roller is provided for each type-bar.
It is obvious that one advantage of my improved construction is that should interference or impact occur between descending and ascending type-heads the ascending typehead will be free to shift sufficiently to pass a descending type-head, while the latter will be positively locked against shifting by such impact.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a writing mechanism, the combination of a type-bar, a multiple type-head pivotally carried thereon,actuating mechanism carried by said type-bar for adjusting the type head, a link connecting said actuating mechanism and type-head, and locking means carried by the type-bar and engaging the said link intermediary of said actuating means and type-head to positively lock the same in its adjusted positions, substantially as described.
2. In a Writing mechanism, the combination ofa type-bar, a multiple type-head pivotally carried thereon,actuating mechanism carried by said type-bar for adjusting the typehead, a link connecting said actuating mechanism and type-head, locking means carried by the type-bar and engaging the said link to positively lock the same in its adjusted positions,and means carried by the typesbar and constructed to return the parts to their normal position, substantially as described.
3. In a writing mechanism, the combination of a type-bar, a multiple type-head pivotally carried thereon,actuating mechanism carried by said type-bar for adjusting the typehead, a link connecting said actuating mechanism and type-head, locking means carried by the type-bar and engaging the said link to positively lock the same in its adjusted positions, and means carried by said type-bar and engaging said actuating mechanism to return the parts to their normal position, substantially as described.
4. In a writing mechanism, the combination of a type-bar, a multiple type-head pivotally carried thereon, a rock-arm pivoted on said type-bar, a link connecting said typehead and rock-arm and carrying an actuatingtailpiece for adjusting the link and its attached type-head, and means carried by the type-bar and engaging said link intermediary of said actuating means and type-head to positively lock the same in its adjusted positions, substantially as described.
5. In a writing mechanism, the combina tion of a type-bar, a multiple type-head pivotally carried thereon, a rock-arm pivoted on said type-bar, a link connecting said typehead and rock-arm and carrying an actuatingtailpiece for adjusting the link and its attached type-head, means carried by the typebar and engaging said link to positively lock the same in its adjusted positions, and a spring carried by the type-bar and connected to said rock-arm to return the same to its normal position, substantially as described.
6. In a writing mechanism, the combination of a type-bar, a multiple type-head pivotally carried thereon, a rock-arm pivoted on said type-bar, a serrated link connecting said type-head and rock-arm and carrying an .actuating-tailpiece for adjusting the link and its attached type-head, and means carried by the type-bar and engaging said serrations to positively lock the link in its adjusted positions, substantially as described.
7. In a writing mechanism, the combination of a type-bar, a multiple type-head pivotally carried thereon, a rock-arm pivoted on said type-bar, a serrated link connecting said type-head and rock-arm and carrying an actuating-tailpiece for adjusting the link and its attached t y.pe-head, and spring means carried by the type-bar and engaging said serrations to positively lock the link in its adjusted positions, substantially as described.
8. In a writing mechanism, the combination of a type-bar pivotally supported, means for actuating said type-bar about its pivot to writing position, a multiple. type-head pi-votally secured to said type-bar, actuating mechanism carried by said type-bar, a link connectingsaid type-head and actuating mechanism, an actuator, means constructed to shift said actuator into the path of said actuating mechanism, whereby the typehead will be adjusted upon movement of the type-bar about its pivot, and locking means carried by the type-bar and engaging said link intermediary of said actuating means and type-head to positively lock the parts in theiradjusted positions, substantially as described. In a writing mechanism, the combina tion of atype-bar pivotally supported, means for actuating said type-bar about its pivot to writing position, a multiple type-head piv* otally secured to said type-bar, actuating mechanism carried by said type-bar, a link connecting said type-head and actuating mechanism, an actuator, means constructed to shift said actuator into the path of said actuating mechanism at a point adjacent to the normal position of said 1nechanism,wh ereby the type-head will be adjusted during early movement. of the type-bar about its pivot,
and locking means carried by the type-barand engaging said link intermediary of said actuating means and type-head to positively lock the parts in their adjusted positions, substantially as described.
10. In a writing mechanism, the combination of a type-bar pivotally supported, means for actuating said type-bar about its pivot to writing position, a multiple type-head pivotally carried on said bar, a rock-arm pivoted on said bar, a link connectingsaid type-head and rock-arm and carrying an actuating-tailpiece, locking means carried by the type-bar and engaging said link intermediary of said actuating means and type-head to positively lock the same, an actuator, and means constructed to shift said actuator into the path of the tailpiece, whereby the link and its attached type-head will be adjusted upon movement of the type-bar, substantially as described.
11. In a writing mechanism, the combination of a type-bar, a multiple type-headpivotally carried thereon, actuating mechanism carried by said type-bar for adjusting the type-head, a link connecting said actuating mechanism and type-head, locking means carried by the type-bar and engaging the said link to positively lock the same in its adjusted positions, and means constructed and arranged to engage said locking means to maintain such locking means out of engagement with the link when the type-bar is in its normal upright position, substantially as described.
12. In a writing mechanism, the combination of a type-bar, a multiple type-head pivotally carried thereon, a rock-arm pivoted on said type-bar, a link connecting said typehead and rock-arm and carrying an actuating-tailpiece for adjusting the link and its attached type-head, means carried by the type-bar and engaging said link to positively lock the same in its adjusted positions, and means constructed and arranged to engage said locking means to maintain such locking means out of engagement with the link when the type-bar is in its normal upright position, substantially as described.
13. In a writing mechanism, the combination of a type-bar pivotally supported, means for actuating said type-bar about its pivot to writing position, a multiple type-head pivotally secured to said type bar, actuating mechanism carried by said type-bar, a link connecting said type head and actuating mechanism, an actuator, means constructed to shift said actuator into the path of said actuating mechanism, whereby the typehead will be adjusted upon movement of the type-bar about its pivot, and a resilient member carried by the type-bar and engaging said link to positively lock the parts in their adjusted positions,su bstantially as described.

In a Writing mechanism, the combination of a type-bar pivotal] y supported, means for actuating said type-bar about its pivot to writing position, a multiple type-head pivotally secured to said type-bar, actuating mechanism carried by said type-bar, a link connecting said type-head and actuating mechanism, an actuator, means constructed to shift said actuator into the path of said actuating mechanism, whereby the type-head will be adjusted upon movement of the type-bar about its pivot, a resilient member carried by said type-bar and engaging the said link to positively lock the parts in their adjusted positions, said resilient member provided with a portion extending to the rear of said link, and means constructed and arranged to engage such extending portion to maintain the locking means out of engagement with said link when the type-bar is in its normal upright position, substantially as described.
15. In a writing mechanism, the combination of a type-bar pivotally supported, means for actuating said type-bar about its pivot to writing position, a multiple type-head pivotally secured to said type-bar, actuating mechanism carried bysaid type-bar, a link connecting said type-head and actuating mechanism, an actuator comprising a segmental plate, means constructed to shift said actuator into the path of said actuating mechanism, whereby the type-head will be adjusted upon movement of the type-bar about its pivot, and locking means carried by the type-bar and engaging said link intermediary of said actuating means and type-head to positively lock the parts in their adjusted positions, substantially as described.
16. In a writing mechanism, the combination of a type-bar pivotally supported, means for actuating said type-bar about its pivot to writing position, a multiple type-head pivotally secured to said type-bar, actuating mechanism carried by said type-bar, a link connecting said type-head and actuating mechanism, an actuator inclined to the path of said actuating mechanism to permit such mechanism to ride over the actuator, upon contact therewith on either a forward or rearward movement of the type-bar, means constructed to shift said actuator into the path of said actuating mechanism, whereby the type-head will be adjusted upon movement of the type-bar about its pivot, and locking means carried by the type-bar and engaging said link intermediary of said actuating means and type-head to positively lock the parts in, their adjusted positions, substantially as described.
17. In a writing mechanism, the combination of a type-bar pivotal] y supported, means for actuating said type-bar about its pivot to writing position, a multiple type-head pivotally secured to said type-bar, actuating mechanism carried by said type-bar, a link connecting said type-head and actuating mechanism, an actuator provided with frictionbearings and inclined to the path of said actuating mechanism to permit such mechanism to ride. over the actuator upon contact therewith on either a forward or rearward movement of the type-bar, means constructed to shift said actuator into the path of said ac tuating mechanism, whereby the type-head will be adjusted upon movement of the typebar about its pivot, and locking means carried by the type-bar and. engaging said link positions, substantially as described.
18. In a writing mechanism, the combination of a type-bar, a multiple type-head pivotally carried thereon, means constructed to actuate said type-head, means constructed to positively lock said type-head, a pivotal support for said type-bar comprising a guide- 10 yoke, and means carried by the guide-yoke for effecting accelerated return of the type-v to positively lock the parts in their adjusted bar to normal position, substantially as described. v
