BUILDING STIRRUP.

UNITED STATES Patented November 1'7, 1903.
PATENT OFFICE.
WAINWRIGHT B. GERVAIS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO lCHAS.
MULVEYy MFG. CO., A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
BUILDING-.Shanna I e SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 744,527, dated November 17, 1903.
Application tiled October 5, 1903. Serial No. 175,744. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WAINWRIGHT B. GER- VAIS, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in'Building Stirrups, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to stirrups for supporting connections between girders and joists of buildings, and has for its object to provide a simple and eflicient construction of a double stirru p having great strength and lightness and in which buckling of the upper horizontal members of the stirrup is guarded against, all as will hereinafter more fully appear and be more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrative of the present invention, Figure l is a perspective View of a doublestirrup embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional elevation of an upper horizontal member of the stirrup and the preferred form of joints between the component parts of such member.
Similar numerals of reference indicate like parts in both views.
As representedA in the drawings, the present double stirrup comprises a pair of lower horizontal plate members l and a pair of upper horizontal plate members 2, the respective pairs being arranged at right angles to each other and connected together by pairs of vertical plate members 3,.having a quarter-twist intermediate' their height, as illustrated in Fig. l of the drawings. y
In the present invention va stirrup of the described construction is formed in halves, each half comprising a single lower horizontal member l, a pair of vertical members 3,
' and portions of a pair of upper horizontal members 2. Said portions of the pair of npper horizontal members 2 are connected to the corresponding portions of the pair of upper horizontal members of a similar stirrup half by an enlarged joint, preferably of the lap form shown in Figsland 2 of the drawings, and secured-together by rivets 5. ,With enlarged joints 4 arranged midway of the length of such upper members 2 and extending some distance on either side of a median line a very strong and substantial construction is afforded such member in convenient `andeconomical manner and ample strength imparted to such members to resist a buc- 'kling tendency thereof under the great stress to which the same may be exposed in practical use in storage-warehouses, 6to.
Having thus fully described my saidinvention, what I claim as new, and desire `to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A building-stirrup, comprising a pair of lower horizontal plate members, a pair of npper'horizontal plate members in right-angle relation to the pair of lower members aforesaid, and pairsv of vertical quarter-twist plate i members connecting the upper and lower horizontal members together; the stirrup being formed in halves and connected together by enlarged joints in the middle portions of a pair of the horizontal members, for the purpose set forth.
2. A building-stirrnp, comprising a pair of lower horizontalplate members, a pair of up- .per horizontal plate members in right-angle
