PATENT OFFICE,
EN VELOP MOlS-TENER AND SEALER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 743,667,
Application filed August @1903.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT H. STRONG, of Galesburg, in the county of Knox and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelop Moisteners and Sealers, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to providea simple and efiective article of desk-furniture which is so constructed that byproperly placing the flap of an envelop therein and moving the envelop in a direct line the gum on the flap will be moistened, after which the flap is pressed against the rear fold of the envelop, so as to effectively seal the same.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of an envelop moistener and sealer made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation; Fig. 3, a sectional view, and Fig. 4 a diagram matical view, showing the moistener between the flap and rear face of the envelop.
, jects from the casing plate A refers to a suitably-constructed base which has therein a water-chamber a, and supported along the front edge of the base, so
as to be raised slightly therefrom, is a plate B, having therethrough a longitudinal opening 19. The plate B carries a swinging or movable moistening -pad D, consisting, preferably, of a fiat metallic tube, from the end of which projects a piece of rigid wick-casing (1, through which is passed the wick or pad D. The wick or pad is attached at one end to the B to provide a swinging connection or hinge, which permits the pad swinging into the water-chamber. The end of the wick farthest from the end (1, and when the casing and wick are raised by an envelop the projecting end of the wick contacts with the gumined attached to the plate proportion of the flap.
In practice I prefer to cover the major portion of the upper face of the plate B and the dated November 10, 1903.
SerialNmIBBAZ. momma.)
principal part of the opening therethrough with a plate E, such plate being used to cover the opening and exclude dust therefrom.
At a considerable distance to one side of the plateB are two upwardly-projecting studs f, which maintain a plate F horizontally above the base, and to this plate are secured a number of pressing-fingers G, the tension of which may be regulated by a set-screw f. The fingers bear upon a roller H, and after the flap of the envelop has been moistened the sealing is effected by the envelop being passed under the spring presser-fingers and over the roller.
In use an envelop is placed so that its flap will overlie the topplate E of the frame and enter the way formed between the plate B and the base A, and as the envelop-is moved toward the roller and presser-iingers the moistener or pad D will be raised from the watertank and brought in contact with the gummed surface of the flap, and when the envelop is drawn beyond the moistener it automatically returns to place in the water-chamber.
Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that many slight modifications may be made.
I claim-e 7 An envelop lnoistener and sealer consisting of a base having therein a water-receptacle and to one side of the receptaclearoll, a wickcarrying frame maintained to be swung on its support in and out of the Water-receptacle, and spring presser-bars which have a spring movement toward shown.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two'witnesses.
