Beit known that I, HUBERT WITTE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Seats, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

My invention relates to a ear-seat having an immovable back, the construction being such that the cushion portion of the seat is somewhat longer than the back portion, while the brackets that secure the back to the frame of the seat do not project out so far as the' ends of the cushion, so that the entire cush'- ion is available for persons to sit upon.

My invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

Fig. IV is a perspective view of the lower end of one of the brackets that connect the back to the end castings. Fig. V is an enlarged detail horizontal section taken on line V V, Fig. I. Fig. VI is an enlarged detail vertical section taken on line VI VI, Fig. I.

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the legs of the seat, and 2 the cross-strips.

3 represents the cushion, and 4 the back, of the seat. The back is connected to the end castings 5 of the seat by means of arms or brackets 6, that are bent outwardly at 7 to clear the en ds of the cushionland inwardly at 8 to bring their lower ends into line with the end castings 5. The lower ends of the brackets have heads 9, that t in recesses 10, formed in the end castings 5, and the fore ward ends of these heads are provided with odset lugs or ears 11, that pass through perforations or openings 12 in the end castings and bear against the inner faces Vof the castings, as shown at 13, Fig. V. The heads 9 are secured to the castings and to the outer ends of the cross-strips 2 by means of bolts 14. The brackets are thus securely held to the end castings, and by forming them with the bends 7 and 8 they are permitted to pass around the ends of the cushion (which overhangs the end castings) and have their upper ends secured to the back 4.

By thus constructing a car-seat the seating capacity of the cushion is maintained, While the back of the seat is shortened up to provide more aisle room in the car.

I claim as my invention- 1. In a car-seat, the combination of end castings, a cushion overhanging the end castings, a back, and brackets secured to the back and connected yto the end castings by means of odset ears fitting in openings formed in the end castings and by bolts that pass through the brackets, the end castings, and partially through the cross-pieces of the seat, substantially as set forth.

2. In a car-seat, the combination of end castings, a cushion overhanging the end castings, a back, and brackets secured to the back and bent to pass around the ends of the cushion, said brackets having heads seated in recesses formed in the end castings to which they are bolted and having offset ears fitting in openings formed in the end castings, substantially as set forth.
