PATENT OFFICE.
LUOIEN V. AXTELL, OF PERRY, OHIO.
HARVESTER-REEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 742,557, dated October 27, 1903. Application filed August 23, 1902- Serial No. 120,816. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUOIEN V. AXTELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Perry, in the county of Lake and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Harvester-Reels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact'description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawlugs.
The object of my invention is to-provide an improved harvester-reel of very simple construction in which the constituent parts are held together in any desired relative position without using bolts or screws.
The invention, which will be hereinafter described in detail, maybe here summarized as consisting of the construction and combination of parts illustrated in the drawings and definitely set forth in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a view showing in partial cross-section as much of a complete reel as is necessary to disclose my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a detailed cross-sectional view of one of the blade-clamps, and Fig. 4 is another detailed view of the blade-clamp viewed from the other side.
Referring to the parts by letters, A represents a hub, having in each side a'plurality of spoke-sockets a, preferably inclined as shown. At the inner end of each socket is a shouldered recess a, and outside of each socket is an arm a or some equivalent support for the spoke. The spokes B are substantially of the form shown, adapted to pass into said sockets, and they have on'their inner ends the hooks b, which fit the shouldered recesses ct. On the outer end of each spoke a clamping device 0 is secured. Now when two associated spokes projecting from opposite sides of the hub are drawn toward each othera blade D is placed in the embrace of said clamping devices. The parts of the reel are held together, because the hooksb are then held in the recesses ct, wherefore the removal of said spokes is impossible. At this time also the spokes lie against the arms a and are supported thereby.
The clamping devices shown have each a fixed part c and a movable part c. A socketpiece 0 is formed on the inner end of the fixed by which it is secured to the outer end part,
jaw and socket, lies at such angle to the socket that when thelatter is embracing a spoke end the shank will occupy a position substantially at right angles to the axis of the rod. The movable part c has a jaw 0 which opposes the jaw 0 and a shank 0 which operates in a slot .0 in the shank 0 to which it is pivoted. The outer surface of the shank c is serrated for engagement with a tooth e on a locking-sleeve E, which is adapted to embrace both shanks c and c and thus hold the jaws closed. Both jaws may have teeth 0 to engage with the blade D, whereby it may be firmly held.
Having described my invention, I claim-- 1. In a harvester-reel, the combination of a hub having spoke-sockets, each ofwhich has a shoulder, spokes having hooked inner ends which are placed in said sockets with the hooks engaging said shoulders, blades, and means for securing them to the outer ends of the spokes, substantially as and for the pursaid clamps, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a harvester-reel, in combination of the hub having inclined spoke-sockets in its sides,
and spokes having their inner ends placed in said'sockets, with clamps, each of which consists of a fixed member having on its inner end a socket which receives the outer end of a s'poke,'and having its outer end shaped to form a clamping-jaw, a movable clampingjaw pivoted to said fixed member, and a device for holding said jaws closed and blades in the embrace .of said clamping-jaws,snbstantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. In a harvester-reel, the combination of the hub having inclined spoke-sockets in its sides, and spokes having their inner ends.
placed in said sockets, with clamps,
which consists of a fixed member'having on each of its inner end a socket which receives the outer end of a spoke, and having its outer end shaped to form a clamping-jaw, a movable clamping-jaw pivoted to said fixed member and having external serrations, a lockingsleeve embracing the fixed memberand adapted to engage with the serrated part of the movable member to hold the jaws closed, and blades in the embrace of said clamping-jaws, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
5. Inaharvester-reel,thecombination,with a hub consisting of a pair of flanges with diagonal spoke-sockets through them, said sockets having recesses formed on one wall thereof, spokes occupying said sockets and having hooks engaging said recesses, and blades clamped to the outer ends of said spokes.
6. In a harvester-reel, the combination of a hub having in its opposite sides inclined sockets each of which has a shouldered recess, and inclined spokes which enter said sockets and have books on their ends which engage said recesses, with clam ping devices having a socketed inner end, which receives the outer end of a spoke, a shank which when the clamp is in place lies at substantially right angles to the axis of the reel, a member pivoted to said shank, and a device for locking said clamp, and blades in the embrace of said clamps, substantially as and for the purpose specified. In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
