SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 742,367, dated October 27, 1903.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAXIMIIJIAN M. SUPPns, of Elyria, in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rolling-Mills, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in rolling-mills, and is designed to provide means whereby greater strength may be provided in the couplings without increasing the diameter of the rolls and whereby in any given mill smaller rolls may be employed than would otherwise be necessary, thus reducing the cost and permitting the use of a smaller driving-engine.
To this end my invention consists in staggering or alternating the upper and lower couplings in such a manner that each will be free of interference with the adjacent upper or lower coupling, and to facilitate this arrangement Iemploy rolls and also pionions having each a longer neck or spindle at one end than at the other, the upper and lower rolls and pinions being reversed end for end. In this manner the coupling between the upper roll and its leading spindle and between said spindle and the driving-pinion are made to come intermediately of the couplings of the lower roll and pinion. This arrangement not only enables each coupling to be-made of sufficient diameter to give it the necessary strength, but it also permits the roll-wabbler to be largely increased in size and strength both without increasing the distance between the roll centers.
My invention also consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all substantially as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is an elevation of a rolling-mill embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a detailsection View showing one of the couplings.

The rolls, as well as the pinions, are interchangeable,and either roll or either pinion may be taken out in the usual manner by sliding the couplings It will be noted ter of the wabbler maybe made equal to the diameter of the roll-neck.
It will be obvious that my invention is applicable to three-high mills and also to mills in which two or more sets of rolls are coupled end for end. Hence I do not wish to limit myself to the particular construction arran gement,and combinations of parts herein shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is- V 1. In a rolling-mill, the combination with the pinions, the rolls, and the couplings which connect the rolls and pinions, said rolls having necks or gudgeons of unequal lengths at their two ends, and reversed end for end,
whereby the longer necks or gudgeons of the adjacent ends project in opposite directions and thereby bring said couplings into staggered or alternating relation to each other.
2. In a rolling-mill, the combination with the rolls having necks of unequal lengths at their two ends, adjacent rolls being reversed end for end, of the driving-pinions also havingnecks of unequal lengths and also reversed end for end, whereby the long necks of the adjacent rolls and pinions project in opposite directions and the couplings between each roll and pinion and the intermediate spindle are displaced longitudinally with respect to the couplings between the adjacent roll and its pinion.
