TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, E. FEReUsoK, .of Newbern, in the county of Craven, and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and-improved Method of Filling Steam-Boilers; and I do hereby declarethat the followingis a full, clear, and exact'description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new and improved method of filling steam-boilers with water, and it consists in the arrangement of a water-supply pipe, which is, provided with a suitable check-valve, wherewith the'boile't may be filled with water by the vacuum produced therein by the condensation of steam, as will be herein more fully described.
The drawing represents a longitudinal side elevation of a steam-boiler, with my arrangement for filling attached.
A is the boiler, which, in this example of my invention, is represented as an iron fire-box tubular boiler, but with-any improvement it is immaterial what kind ofa steam-boiler it is. B is the pipe, which I attach to the boiler, and which extends to the supply-reservoir. G represents the blow-elf cock. .The pip'eB is provided with a stop-'cock,'the lever diwhich is seen at D. Below the stop-stock there is a check-valve, which is operated by pressure, being closed by pressure from the boiler, and opened by reason of the vacuum and consequent presdure of the water, due to the atmospheric pressure.
The operation of filling a boiler by mymethod is as follows: When it is desired to blow the water from the boiler for the purpose of cleansing and refillingit with pure water, the fire is withdrawn, and the furnace cooled as rapidly as possible, and the steam is allowed to run downto twenty or twenty-five pounds pressure. Then close the boiler entirely, by shutting thegauge-cocks, feed-cocks, valves, &c., connected with the boiler, in order to exclude the air. Then open the blow-off cock, and blow ofi all the water and steam from the boiler, and as the last of the steam-passes out, the blow-oil cock is closed, to exclude the air. In this condition the boiler should be left for fifteen or twenty minutes to cool, and for the condensation of the remaining steam and vapor.
which may have been generated by the remaining heat from the moisture in the boiler. Then open the cock in the'supply-pipe B, and the water will rush from the'rescr voir, through the pipe, ilito the boiler, to fill the vacuum which has been produced therein. In this manner a boiler may be filled to any desired point, proper precau- {ion being at all times taken to exclude the air, so as to obtain as perfect a vacuum as possible. By this simple arrangement and process the laborious operation of filling boilers by hand-pumping is rendered unnecessary,
and much valnablggi me'is consequentlysaved. 7
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- I The arrangement of theQsupply-pipe B, cock D, and pipe-'0, with the boiler A, whereby, with a vacuum in the boiler, and consequent atmospheric pressure, the water is injected to the boiler, substantially as herein shown and described.
' -E. FERGUSON.
