Be it known that L'LOIS SCHUTTE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, in the .State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Valve Construction, of which the following is a trueI and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part thereof.

View I form the perforation ihroughwhich the valve-spindle extends with a valve-seat around its inner end, and I connect with the valve or a part moving with the valve a supplemental valve adapted to seat itself upon this seat and close the perforation when the main steam-valve is raised. The stuflingbox is of course situated at some point in the perforation above the valve-seat, and I form in the perforation betweenr the valve-seat and the stuffing-box a chamber adapted to receive ,any steam which leaks beyond the valve, said modifications of my invention.

A' indicates the perforation through which the valve-spindle passesg Athe stufng-box; Aa in Figs. 3 and 4, a threaded portionof the perforation into which a threadedportion of vthe valve-spindle screws. a3, Fig. 1, indicates a similar thread, in this case, however, formed in a thimble B, inserted at the top of the perforation and held in place by an annular nut B and a spline B2.
A4, Figs. 3 and 4, indicates a valve-seat formed at the inner end of the perforation, and a4, Figs. l and 2, a similar valve-seat formed in a plate C, which plate is inserted at the base of the perforation A.
D indicates a plate set in the perforation at the bottom of the stuffing-box D', indicating the stuffing-box gland between which and the plate D the packing is inserted, the gland .being held downen the packing by any convenient'means-such, for instance, as are indicated in Fig. e, where vit is gripped by a threaded annulus D2.`
E is the valve-spindle, shown as having aV projecting annular flange' E at its inner end and provided with a threaded portion E2, which engages the threads A3 or a3 of the perforation. In Figs. 1 and e I have shown a hand-wheel E3, secured to the top of the spindle.
K indicates achamber formed above the `valve-seat at the bottom of the perforation and below the stuffing-box. This chamber is provided with an out1etpassage-as, for instance, a channel F, as shown inV Figs. 2 and -having its endV normally closed by a plug F, or the outletpassage instead of passing through the valve-casing may be formed in the valve-spindleas shown at f in Figs. l and 4, the' outer end of the passage being closed normally by a plug ff.
G indicates the steamvalve, which may be of any convenient construction and which is shown as secured to the ianged end E of the spindle by a clamping-piece of any convenient construction, as is indicated at G' in the IOO the seat at the base of the perforation should be of such a character that it will move up and down with the valve.
In the modification illustrated in Fig. l the -valve G is provided with a piston extension I, which moves in an open-ended cylinder, (indicated by J,) this being the usual construction and in no Wise connected with my present invention.
In operation when it is desired to renew or adjust the packing in the stufing-box the operator turns the valve-spindle, so as to retract the valve and bring the supplemental valve into tight Contact With the valve-seat at the base of the perforation, and Where the closure is approximately perfect the operator valve will be intercepted in the chamber K and pass out through the outlet-passage F orf instead of forcing its Way through the stuffing-box. y
Having noW described my invention, What I claim as new, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is-a In combination with a valve, a perforated portion of the valve-casing and a valve-spindle passing through suchperforation," a valveseat extending around the' lower part of the perforation in the easing, a supplemental valve moving with the main valve and acting to contact with said valve-seat and close the perforation in the casing when the main valve is retracted by the spindle, a stuffing-box situated in the spindle-perforation, a chamber between the stuing-box and the valve-seat and an outlet-passage extending from said chamber for the escape of fluid and afel for said outlet-passage situated at the outer end thereof.
