PATENT OFFICE.
MAX F. STADTMULLER, or POMEROY, IOWA.
SPECIFIGATIQId'fMming part of Letters Patent No. 740,054, dated September '29, 1903. Application filed June 29,1903. Serial No 163,604. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern/.1
Be it known that I, MAX F. STADTMULLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pomeroy, in the county of Calhoun and State of Iowa, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Machines for Cutting and Bending Metal Strips, &c., of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a machine of the type'embodying the use of a plurality of plungers operated by a single lever and adapted to cut sheet-metal strips in ascertain ed lengths, at the same time bending the same so as to form clips of a peculiar structure and punching openings therein. The machine is also adapted to form depressions in metallic strips, separate dies being carried by the machine for cooperation with the several plungers to perform the several functions of cutting, bending, and punching the sheet metal. v
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for efiecting the result reference'is to be had to the following description and drawings hereto attached.
While the essential and characteristic fea- 'tures of the invention are susceptible of modification, still the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure l is a perspective view of the ma-;
chine. Fig. 2is a sectional view of one of the cutting members. Figs.- 3, 4, and 5 are elevations of the members.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to iuthe'following description and indicated in all'the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The machine consists of a base 1, provided with diverging legs 2, which are adapted to be secured to that upon which'the machine is disposed. Extending upwardly from the base 1 is the body 3 of the machine, which body is provided at intervals thereon with a plurality of disks 4, 4 and 4". most disk 4 is provided upon its upper side with a plurality of dies 5, 5, and 5, which dies are each of a diiferent form, so as to effect a different action upon cooperation with the several plungers 6. The plungers 6 are The lowerdisposed for reciprocal movement in openings in the disks 4 and 4 said plungers being normally held in their uppermost positions'by coilsprings 7, disposed about the same and located between the disks 4 and 4*,said coil-springs bearing against transverse pins which are carried by the plungers. Swivelly mounted upon the upper end of the body 3 is a yoke 9, to which is pivoted a lever 10, which is adapted to be swung by a rotary movement, so as to be disposed above the upper ends of any one of the plungers 6. The lever 10 is of any suitable type and is pivoted intermediate the side members of the yoke 9. Alink 11is pivoted to the lever adjacent the yoke 9 and is adapted to no 'operate with projections 12 upon the upper end portions of the plungers to lift the plungers should they bind after the operation of depressing or cutting the metallic strips. lower ends of the plungers 6, which cooperate with the dies 5 and 5 are provided with cutters 13, by which the strips are cut into an ascertained length necessary to form a clip or analogous device. The dies are removably secured to the disk 4}, being fastened in position by screw fastenings or the like. The dies 5 and 5 have adjacent thereto adjustable gages 14, which gages consist of a plate having its lower portion bent angularly therefrom to constitute an attaching portion 15 and having a lateral extension 16 to form a stop, the posi- -tion of which determines the length of the strip cut. The cutters 13, carried by'the lower ends of the plungers 6, are secured tothe plungers by removable fastenings, so that when desirable they may be detached forresharpening orfor any other purpose. The plungers which cooperate with the dies 5 and 5 are each provided with removable punches 17, which punches are also remov-,
The
ably held in place by screw fastenings and are adapted to enter openings 18 in the aforesaid dies 5 and 5 A peculiar form of clearer is utilized to prevent the clip from being carried upward by the plunger, and this clearer consists of -a spring-pawl, which is secured to a hanger pawl consists of a length of spring-wire bent intermediate its ends to form a coil, which coil is disposed about the spaced end of the hanger 20, the upper end of the aforesaid length of spring-wire being passed into an opening upon the disk 4 and the lower end disposed in contact with the outer face of the plunger, with which it is adapted to cooperate. The lower end aforedescribed constitutes the spring-pawl, and a groove 21 is provided upon the outer face of the plunger to guide the pawl in its movement proximate the plunger, so that when the plunger is in its uppermost position, being raised after the operation of cutting and bending a clip, the spring-pawl 19 moves approximately in contact with the punch 17 and displaces the clip therefrom should it have been drawn upwardly by the binding action of the cutters and lower end of the plunger.
In the working machine as presented by this invention the die 5 is adapted to depress a portion of the metallic strip, the die 5 to cut a portion of the strip and to form the same into a clip having a single inclined end, at the same time perforating the other end of the said clip to provide an attaching portion, and the die 5 because of its form provides a clip similar to the clip formed by the die 5, but having two inclined end portions, the perforation in the clip being disposed intermediate the said endportions.
The disks 4, 4, and 4 and the base 1 are rigidly secured together by a bolt which passes through the body, indeed virtually constituting the body of the machine, which bolt has a nut screwed upon the lower end thereof to secure the parts,as above described. The disks are spaced from each other by tubular parts 22,passing around the bolt 23, and also are held rigidly by fastenings passed through collars projected from the under sides thereof.
In the practical operation of the machine the lever 10 may be moved so as to operate anyone of the plungers 6, as found desirable and according to the die which is to be used. As apparent, the machines are to be manually operated and may be made in sizes according to the character of the work to be performed, the machines being specially adapted, as will be noted from the foregoing description, to change the structure of a metallic strip of sheet metal, to out such strip into lengths, and to form clips which may be used for holding various kinds of strips in such positions as the circumstances of the case may require.
