PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD M. PUMPHREY, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO NANCY E. LOUTT, OF LAWRENCE, INDIANA.
FEED-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 738,938, dated. September 15, 1903.
Application filed April 21,1903.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, EDWARD M. PUMPHREY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in that class of feed-boxes described and claimed in my Patent No. 624,087, issued to me May 2, 1899; and the object of my invention is to provide additional means for preventing waste of feed. 1
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.
Figure 1 is a vertical section showing the manner of use, and Fig. 2 is a section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. I
In the drawings, 10 indicates a feed-box having an intermediate vertical partition 11, which forms an auxiliary feed-holding chamber 12, the bottom 13 of which is inclined and leads to a slot 14, formed in partition 12 near its bottom. Mounted in chamber 12, so as to slide vertically between ways 15, is a slidedoor 16, the lower end 18 of which projects through slot 14 in position to be engaged by the nose or upper lip of the feeding animal and the arrangement being such that when slide 16 is in its normal lowest position it will close slot 14. Plate 16 carries, if desired, a plurality of fingers 17, which project into chamber 12 and serve to prevent the feed from clogging and failing to flow downward to the opening 14. I p
In operation plate 16 is normally byv reason of its weight in its lowest position, with the portion 18 resting against the lowest edge of slot 14, and thus preventing the flow of feed- Serial No. 153,611. (No model.)
through the slot. The animal in feeding will raise the plate 16 by engaging the projection 18, and a small quantity of feed will flow and provided with means by which it may be engaged by the feeding animal.
2. In a feed-box, the combination, with the feeding-chamber and the feed-chamber communicating therewith through a slot in an intervening partition, said partition, of a plate 16 mounted to slide vertically on said partition, and a projection carried by said plate and projecting through said slot into the feeding-chamber, for the purpose set forth.
3. In a feed-box, the combination, with a feeding-chamber and the feed-chamber communicating therewith through a slot in an .intervening partition, said partition, of aplate 16 mounted to slide vertically on said partition, a projection carried by said plate and projecting through said slot into the feedingchamber, and fingers projecting from the plate into the feed-chamber.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal, at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 18th day of April, A. D. 1903.
EDWARD IUMIHREY. [L. 5.]
