STOVE ATTACH M ENT;
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 736,649, dated August 18, 1903.
Application filed January 6, 1903. Serial No. 138,053. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it kn own that I, MATTHEW J.-STEvnNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ruby, in the county of St. Clair and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Stove Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates toheating-stoves, and has for its object the production of a device whereby the heat radiated from the stove may be utilized to a greater extent and more uniformly distributechwith the accompanying econornyin the consumption of fuel; and the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter shown and described, and specified in the claims. I
In the drawings illustrative of the invention, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the device applied. Fig. 2 is a similar View illustrating a modification in the construction.
Theimproved device consists of an external drum 10, open at the upper end and provided with spaced apertures 11 relatively near the open end and adapted to'be connected into the smoke-discharge flue of a heating-stove, 12 as shown.
The drum 10 may be formed of any desired length, and as many of the apertures 11 may be employed as required and the apertures formed of any required size. The drum will be of sheet metal, as light as possible consistent with the strains to which it will be sub.- jected, as the lighter the drum the more rapid the circulation and consequent increased efficiency. WVhen employed in connection with the smoke-flue leading from the stove, the drum 10 will be provided with an intermediate transverse partition 14,havin g spaced perforations 15 preferably near the walls of the drum, the partition being located below the perforations 11. \Vithin the outer drum 10 is an inner drum 16, preferably conical and supported upon the partition 1% outside the perforations 15, so that the perforations are within the inner drum 16. The lower section 17 of the smoke-flue leading from the stove 12 is conducted into the outer drum below the partition, and the upper section 18 of the flue leads from the inner drum 16, as shown in Fig. 1. By this arrangement the smoke and other products of the combustion which pass through the fines 17 18 are retarded by the partition lat and deflected laterally therein and caused to pass through the apertures 15 relatively close to the Walls of the outer drum, thereby radiating the heat more thoroughly through the outer drum 10, and consequently more thoroughly effecting the air therein and producing the requisite circulation.
In Fig. 2 another slight change in the structure is shown, consisting in extending the lower portion of the outer drum below the line of the inner drum, as at 19, and providing this depending portion with spaced perforations 20, this depending portion serving to create an additional circulation of the air, as indicated by the arrows. The hot air radiating from the stove contiguous to the fluesection 17 as well as the heat radiated from the lower flue-section is thus utilized to increase the circulation. By this simple arrangement a very rapid free circulation is imparted to the air and the air highly heated at the same time, thus economizing in the use of the fuel as well as insuring a more wholesome condition of the atmosphere within the rooms.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim, is-
1. A heating apparatus consisting of an external drum open at the upper end and provided with an intermediate transverse partition having spaced perforations, said external drum having spaced perforations between the open end thereof and the partition, an inner drum supported above said partition, an inner drum supported below said partition, a smolie-flue leading into said inner drum below said partition, and a smoke-flue leading from said inner drum above said partition, substantially as described.
2. A heating apparatus consisting of an outer drum open at the upper end and havin g an intermediate transverse partition provided with spaced apertures, the outer drum having spaced perforations respectivelyabove and below said partition, an inner drum supported above said partition, an inner drum supported below said partition, a smoke-flue leading into the inner drum below said partition, and a smoke-flue leading from the in nor drum above said partition, substantially as described 3. A heating apparatus consisting of an outer drum open at its upper end and having 'ing from said conical drum above said parti- IO its Walls provided with transverse perforation, substantially as described.
tions, a partition intermediately disposed In testimony that I claim the foregoing as Within said drum below the perforations my own I have hereto affixed my signature in therein and having spaced apertures near the the presence of two Witnesses.
Walls of the drum, a conical drum supported MATTHEYV J. STEVENS. Within said outer drum upon said partition, Witnesses:
a smoke-flue leading into said outer drum W. E. MARVIN,
below said partition, and a smoke-flue lead- H. D. KILETS.
