v Be it known that LbWILLIAM G. OREAMER, of the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings, State of New York, have invented new and impoitnnt Improvements in Brake-Operators; andIdo hereby declare that thefolIou ing is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. I p f The nature of my improvement consists in the attachment of a joint-ed pawl, with a. lever-handle or its equivalent, to the arm that is keyed to the braRe-shafhhnd the attachment to the brake-operator, containing the spring that is used for applying the brakes, a circle of ratchet-teeth for retaining the momentum of the. spring at the point of reaction.
The object of this improvement is to cfi'ect the instant releaseof the pressure of the brakes upon the wheels. As brake-operators are now constructed, some time is required to release the brakes after they have been applied, and it frequently requires the strength of two men, and thus an unnecessary detention of the train is caused.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation. i
I construct my brake-operator with a loose pulley, actuated by a -weight or spring, or with a drum, containing a spiral spring, substantially as heretofore, and at the under side of the drum or pulley I attach a circle of ratchet-teeth, as shown at A A, Figures 1 and Z. In connection therewith is a pawl, 15, asshown at figs. 1 and 2. At the extremity of the arm C, which is keyed firmly to the brake-shaft, I attach a jointed pawl, D, with a lever-handle, E,-as shown at 0, figs. 1 and 2, taking'into a. circle of ratchet-teeth in the top of the drum, in place ofa plain pawl, as heretofore used. I
Thus constructed, the operation of thehrake-opcrator is as follows: The jointed pawl D, at the top of the drum, is in place, as shown.. The side-jointed'pawl G is also in place, as shown. by the drawings. The side pawl B is turned outward, as shown by the dott'edlincs. The brakcman now takes hold of the hand-wheel F, and turns it from right to left, thus winding up the drum containing the spring. The side pawl G holds the power so gained. When the spring is fully wound up, the side pawl B is turned into the ratchet-teeth, as shown. It is now desired to apply the brakes by the brake-operator.- The lever II is lifted upward, which disenga'gcs the pawl G, and instantly the power of the spring revolves the drum K and brake-shaft I, winding up a chain, (attached to thebrake-levers,) which connects at the lower part of the brake-shaft at J. It is now dcsired'to release the brakes, to. accomplish which, lift the lever-handle E of the top pawl D, and the pressure on the point of it, where it engages the teeth, causes it to double up and assume the position shown by the dotted lines, and the brakes are instantly released from pressure on-the wheels by the backward-movement of the brake-shaft, and at the same time the drum reacts, and the pawl B is released from pressure. This cnables'thc car to proceed without delay. To reset the spring, put the top and side pawls D and G in the,position shown, the side pawl B in the position shown by the dotted lines, fig. 2; then turn the hand-wheel Ffrom right to left, and then wind up the spring with full force; then turn the side pawl 13 in against the'tecth, and the brakeoperator is ready for action.
