Be it known that I, PETER REINHALTER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Rock-Drills, of which the .following is a specification.
My invention consists of a new construction of a rock-drill which is especially adapted to be operated by means of power taken from an elecmotors because ofthe costly and curnloersome appliances usually necessary to transp mit the power from the motors to the oper-, ative parts of the* drills.. By my invention.'l such difiiculties are dispensed with and Iam;

To the above ends my invention consists in the novel arrangement of springs adapted' to coact with the reciprocating drill-rod,l vpro-1 vision being xnad'e for rendering said springs readily accessible and for permitting said'I vention, certain of the parts being shown in elevation. Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the ligures Referring to the drawings, l designates a rock-drill, the same consistingof a cylinder 2, having the nose-piece 3, through which the lower extremitya of' the drill-rod 5 passes, the same having a socket 6 therein for the reception of the shank of the tool.

The operation is as follows: The rotation of the liexible or other shaft 7 is ilnparted, through the medium of the beveled gears 9 and 10, to the crank-shaft 1l and thence by the connections 13 and 14 to the cross-head 15, wherefrom it will be apparent that the reciprocation of the cross-head 15 through the medium of the springs 23 and 3l, whose opposite extremities contact, respectively, with the ball-bearing devices carried within the cross-head and with the abutments formed by the parts 32 and 24, will cause a positive and effective reciprocation to be imparted to the drill-rod 5, while theimpact of the blows therefrom can be readily transmitted to the desired point through the medium of the desired tool employed. y
It will of course be understood that the drill-rod 5 may be rotated in any suitable or desired manner, as will be familiar to those skilled in this art.
I desire to call especial attention to the feature of mounting the juxtaposed extremities of the springs 23 and 3l, respectively, upon the ball-bearing devices carried within the cross-head, since it will be seen that by this construction the rod 5 will be permitted to be rotated to the desired extent without undue friction and that by my novel construction the principal operative parts can be readily assembled or disconnected at all times for the purpose of inspection or repairs. It will also be noted that by the employment of the oppositely-located springs 31 and 23 and by reason of the fact that the reciprocating movements of the drill-rod 5 are imparted thereto in each direction by said springs said drill-rod is cushioned during its movements in both directions, whereby the most eective results are attained and the life of the apparatus is prolonged, as is evident.
While I have described my invention as being particularly applicable to be used in connection with an electric motor, it will of course be understood that I do not limit myself thereto, as other equivalent forms of motors may be employed without departing from the spirit of my invention.
It will be apparent that various changes maybe made by those skilled in the art which will come within the scope of my invention, and I do not, therefore, desire to be limited in every instance to the exact construction I have herein shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a rock-drill, a cylinder, a cross-head therein and having oppositely-located extensions, a drill-rod passing loosely through said cross-head, means carried by said cross-head and projecting through slots in the casing for reciprocating the cross-head, abutments upon opposite portions of said drill-rod, ball-bearing devices carried upon opposite portions of said cross-head and received within said extensions, springs interposed between said abutments and ballbearing devices, and means for reciprocating said cross-head.
2. In a rock-drill, a cylinder, a cross-head therein, extensions on either side of said cross-head, ball-bearing devices located within said extensions, abutment-s upon opposite portions of the drill-rod, a drill-rod passing loosely through said cross-head, springs interposed between said abutments and balllbearing devices, and means for reciprocating said cross-head.
3. In a rock-drill, a cylinder, a cross-head therein a drill-rod passing through said crosshead, abutments on opposite portions of said drill-rod, ball-bearing devices in contact with said cross-head, springs interposed between said abutments and ball-bearing devices, openings in said cylinder, pins engaging said cross-head and projecting from said openings, a crank-shaft, and connections from said crank-shaft to said pins.
4:. In a rock-drill, a cylinder, a cross-head therein, a drill-rod passing through said crosshead, abutments on opposite portions of said drill-rod, ball-bearin g devices carried by said cross-head, springs interposed between said abutments and ball-bearing devices, openings in said cylinder, pins in engagement with said cross-head and projecting through said openings, a crank-shaft having a plurality of cranks thereon mounted on opposite sides of said cylinder, and links common to said crank-shaft and pins.
5. In a rock-drill, a flexible shaft, suitable bearings therefor, a crank-shaft, gearing common to said fiexible shaft and crank-shaft, a cylinder adjacent to which said crank-shaft is mounted, the cranks of the latter being located oppositely with respect to said cylinder, a cross-head in the latter having oppositelylocated extensions, ball-bearing devices located within said extensions, pins extending from said cross-head, links connecting said pins and cranks, a drill-rod passing through said cross-head, abutments on opposite portions of said drill-rod, and springs interposed between said abutments and the ball-bearing devices of the cross-head.
6. In a rock-drill, a liexible shaft, suitable bearings therefor, a crank-shaft, gearing common to said flexible shaft, a crank-shaft, a cylinder adjacent to which said crank-shaft IOO IIO
is mounted, the cranks of the latter Ybeing located oppositely with respect to said cylinder, a cross-head in the latter, said cylinder havingoppositely-disposed slots and a cross-head having oppositely-located extensions covering the same, pins extending from said crosshead and working insaid slots, links connecting said pins and cranks, a drillrod passing through. said cross-head, abutments on opposite portions of said drill-rod, and springs interposed between said abutments and cross-head, in combination with ballbearing devices carried by said cross-head and adapted to contact with the juxtaposed ends of said springs, whereby said drill-rod can be rotated according to requirements with a minimum amount of friction.
7. In a rock-drill, a cylinder having oppositely-located slots, a cross-head movable Within'said cylinder, a drill-rod mounted to reciprocate loosely through said cross-head, ball-bearing devices upon opposite sides of said cross-head, abutments upon opposite portions of the drill-rod, springs interposed between said ball-bearing devices and said positely-disposed extensions movable Within said cylinder opposite said slots, ball-bearing devices on said cross-head, abutments on 'I opposite portions of the drill-rod, a drill-rod mountedto reciprocate loosely through said cross-head, independent springs acting upon said ball-bearing devices and engaging said abutments on the drill-rod, pins carried by the cross-head and projecting through said slots, and means connected with the said pins for reciprocating the cross-head.
