Description

@aitr tat-25 @atout @fitta W. W. JOHNSON, OF NASVILL-E, TENNESSEE.
` Letters .Patent No. 73,339, dated January 14, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR POINTINGPIGKETS.
To ALL WHOM'IT MAY ooNcnRN;
Be it known that I, W. W. JOHNSON, of Nashville, in the county of Davidson, and State of Tennessee, have invented a. new and improved Machine for Pointing Pickets, and for similar purposes; and I do hereby declare that the fOHOWHg S a' full, Cle=1r1lnd exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being hadvto the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speciiication, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my invention.
Figure 2 is a rear end view of the same.
Figure 3 is a. plan. p
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to point the ends of pickets or fence-palings,`and cut circular sides or edges on other wood-work; and it consists -in attaching an ordinary earpentcrs plane-iron to lan iron frame, on which is pivoted an arm for holding the picket or other article of wood in such a manner that by turning the said arm onits pivot with the picket, the planciron.shall cut and dress one eide of the end in the arc ot' a circle at one movement. v
By this means pickets may be pointed or dressed to shape at the ends, with great expedition and accuracy, saving a great dealof labor required by the ordinary manner of performing this work.
A is a stand, to be fastened to a. bench. for supporting the bed-plate Bof the machine` On one side ofthe bed-plate B is secured an adjustable clamp, C, in which is held a plane-iron, a, with its edge in a vertical position; and on the opposite side of the bed-plate a swinging arm, D, is pivotcd at b, to turn horizontally with a sliding and adjustable clamp, E, operated by an eccentric-lever, F, for holding pickets of different sizes, placed inV the'clamp, as shown in red. 'In front of the plane-iron a is placed an adjustable slidc,.G, agairist which the end of a picket is placed while it lies in the clamp E, to regulatethe pointing or cutting with thc'plane-iroa.
When the picket is thus placed in position, as shownin the drawings, it is held tight in the clamp E bythe eccentric-lever F, and then, by drawing upon the outer end ot' the picket, to act as alever, it is swung around with the arm D in such a manner that the end of the picket is .brought against the edgcof the plaue-iron, and is cut on ono side in the arc ct' a circle. i
This operation is performed on two or more sides of a picket, which is thus dressed'or pointed quickly and accurately, as shown in fig. 3. The plane-iron clamp C and'the arinD maybe adjusted to cut the ends of the pickets or other articles in arcs of different diameters.
`Having described my invention, what I elaimgas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isp The swinging arin D, provided with the eccentric-lever F and the holding-clamp E, when constructed and arranged to operate the picket against thc knife a, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
The above specification of ny invention signed by me, this 3d day of June, 1867.
i W. W. JOHNSON.
