PATENT OFFICE.
MARTIN MERCER AND CHARLES PHILLIPS, OF NET/V YORK, N. Y.
SIGNAL-LANTERN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 733,243, dated July 7, 1903.
Application filed December 9, 1902. Serial No. 134,495. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it nuty concern:
Be it known that we, MARTIN MERCER and CHARLES PHILLIPs, citizens of the United States, and residents of New Yorl; city, (Manhattan,) county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Signal-Lanterns, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a signal-lantern which is so constructed that the color of the light displayed may be readily changed in a simple and reliable manner.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a side elevation of our improved signal-lantern; Fig. 2, an enlarged plan of the lamp; Fig. 3, a vertical section on line 3 3, Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a similar section on line 4 4, Fig. 2; Fig. 5, a bottom View of the lamp; Fig. 6, a perspective view of the outer chimney; Fig. 7, a similar view of the inner chimney; Fig. 8, a side View of the outer sleeve, and Fig. 9 a similar view of the inner sleeve.
The letter a represents the body of a lantern, through the open base of which the lamp is inserted, as usual. The lamp consists of an oil-reservoir or other source of light b, mounted centrally upon a base-plate c: Around the reservoir 1) there are supported upon the plateca nest of two or more concentric glass chimneys e and 'fof different c0lors-say green and red. Each chimney is provided on its inner side with two diametrically-arranged longitudinal grooves e e f f and on its outer side with two diametrically-arranged lugs e e f f Figs. 7 and 6, the grooves and lugs being formed integral with the glass body of the chimney. Each chimney e f is surrounded by a rotatable sleeve 9 h, respectively placed concentrically upon base-plate 0, so that the inner sleeve g is placed intermediate the chimneys, Figs. 3 and 4, while the outer sleeve h surrounds both chimneys. The sleeves g h are provided with diametrically-arranged inclined slots g g h h, engaged by the lugs 6 respectively. The grooves ef of the chimneys engage, respectively, upright guide rods or rails c ijj, mounted upon the base-plate c and of which the rods i are arranged between reservoirb and the inner chimney e, while the rods j are arranged between inner sleeve 9 and the outer chimney f. It will be seen that by rotating the inner sleeve g the inner chimney 6 may be raised or lowered, while by rorating the outer sleeve 77. the outer chimney may be similarly raised or lowered. In this way the color of the light displayed by the lantern may be quickly changed, and either chimney when raised will be securely held in its elevated position. 1
In order to permit the attendant to readily manipulate the sleeves and change the light, we have devised the following construction:
The base-plate c is provided with two inner diametrically-arranged slots 0 and with two outer similarly-arranged concentric slots 0 Fig. 5. Across the inner slots c extends diametrically an inner handle Z0, that connects two lugs g depending from inner sleeve g through the slots 0, so that by partly rotating the handle the inner sleeve g, and consequently the inner chimney 6, may be raised or lowered. Through each of the outer slots 0 extends from the outer sleeve halug 72 to which is affixed a handle Z. Each lug it? has its separate outer handle l, the two handles Zbeing placed diametrically opposite each other, Fig. 5, and rotating in a plane around and concentric to the plane of rotation of the inner handle 70. Thus by grasping both handles Z the outer sleeve h, and consequently the outer chimney f, may be manipulated without interference with the inner handle it. It will be seen that either the handle it or the two handles ZZ may be readily grasped and turned without interference and that the attendant will by knowing the position of the handles be able to change the color of the light without looking at the base of the lamp.
By making the lugs 6 and the grooves e'f integral with the glass body of the chimneys ef we greatly simplify the construction of the lamp and dispense entirely with the use of a separate chimney-support.
What we claim is- 1. A signal-lantern provided with a pair of concentric cylinders having inner grooves and outer lugs, a pair of rotatable slotted sleeves engaged by the lugs, and upright rods engaging the grooves, substantially as specifled.
2. A signal-lantern provided with a glass chimney having integral inner longitudinal grooves and outer lugs, combined with rods engaging the grooves, and a rotatable slotted sleeve engaging the lugs, substantially as specified.
3. A signal-lantern provided with a base having a pair of concentrically-arranged slots, an inner and an outer rotatable sleeve having lugs projecting through said slots respectively, tan inner handle connecting the lugs of the inner sleeve, and a pair of outer handles connected to the lugs of the outer sleeve, substantially as specified.
4. A signal-lantern provided with a base having a pair of concentrically-arranged slots, an inner rotatable slotted sleeve having lugs projecting through the inner slots, a diametrically-arranged inner handle connecting said lugs, an outer rotatable slotted sleeve having lugs projecting through the outer slots, a pair of outer handles secured to said lugs, an inner and an outer grooved chimney engaged by the sleeves, and rods that engage the chimney-grooves, substantially as specified.
Signed by us at New York city, (Manhattan,) New York, this 8th day of December,
MARTIN MERCER. CHARLES PHILLIPS. Witnesses:
