SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 733,021, dated July 7, 1903.

To allwhom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN 0. Fox, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Telephones;

As shown, A is a receiver, and B is an operating-spring, with its lower end secured to the receiver on the inside and its free end resting on a contact-point c, and thus through wire 1 and wire 2 establishes an alarm-circuit for the subscribed station.
Secured to the outer surface of spring B is a strip of non-conducting material a, which extends through a cut-out portion in the receiver and beyond the outer surface thereof, furnishing means whereby the said spring is actuated. Secured to the inner surface of spring B at a point near its free end is a plate I), which is insulated from the said spring, the object of which is hereinafter explained. Secured to the inner surface of the receiver at right angles to the free end of said spring ward-say half-waythe point of spring Q will contact with the surface of spring B at a point near the outer edge and directly 0pposite the plate I), and thus through their connections, wire 3 and wire 1, establishes a circuit with the alarm mechanism at the censtantially as set forth.

When spring B has been pressed inward its prescribed distance, the plate I) will have come into contact with spring C at a point nearer to its secured end than is the point of its contact with spring 13, and thereby forced the point of the former free from the latter, and thus breaks the signal-circuit. At the same time the free end of spring B has come into contact with spring D, which said spring also lies across the path of travel of the former and is secured to the inner surface of the receiver at a point directly opposite from the fastening of spring C." In this manner through wires 1 and 4 a talking-circuit is established through the central office.
The operation of my device is as follows: Press the plate a, which will force the spring B free from the contact-point c, and as the former continues on its forward travel will first contact with spring 0, thus making the circuit with the alarm system at central station and send in its alarm, and as spring B continues on its travel plate 1) comes in contact with spring 0 and forces the latter free from spring B, thus breaking the latter circuit. Second spring B will contact with spring D, thus forming a talking circuit through central station, spring B all the time holding spring C suspended against plate b. Should the alarm not be heard at central station, another alarm may be sent in by repeating the operation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a receiver of a spring, laterally secured to the inside there'- of, a contact-point for engagement with said spring; an insulated plate secured to the inside of said spring; another spring adapted to engage the said spring and the said plate at different points; another spring for engagement with the first-mentioned spring and means for manually operating the latter sub- 2.
