UNITED STATES" PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB FLOOK OF JOHN, OF MIDDLETOWN, MARYLAND.
MACHINE FOR HULLING CLOVER-SEED.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 733, dated May 10, 1838.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J ACOB FLooK or J 0111;, of Middletown, in the county of Frederick and State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Machine for-Separating Clover- Seed from the Head, which is described as follows, reference being had to the annexed drawings of the same, making part of this specification.-
This machine consists of two oblong frames A, A, Figure 1, each composed of four posts, side and end pieces mortised and tenoned together, which frames are connected by hinges on one side and hooks and staples on the other and when thus connected forming nearly a square frame, covered on the outside by thin boards B extending from about the middle of the posts to the top thereof. Within this frame and box are arranged three parallel floors G C C, Fig. 2, placed at a suitable distance apart. Through these floors are made oblong openings D. The one in the upper floor is called the feeding opening and the one in the lower floor the discharging opening.- A vertical shaft E is placed in the center of the machine its lower end turns upon a cross piece F of the frame near the bottom thereof. Its upper end turns in an aperture in another cross piece G at top. It passes through the three floors and through the center of two pieces, H, Fig. 3, made in the form of a' letter S or any other figure preferred which are fastened to the shaft and turn horizontally between the floors. Each piece forms two arms. Thus there are four arms and all of them are covered on the upper as well as on the under side with perforated sheet iron. Likewise the floors are ward the arms.
chine. The driving pulley I is put on the shaft below the lower floor. A feeder J is inserted into the shaft above the upper floor.
The object in making the machine in two parts is that access may be had to the in-' terior in case any hard substances should get between the floors the separation of the parts being effected by unhooking them at one end and opening them on the hinges at the other end.
Circular curbs are placed between the floors forming a circle a little greater than the diameter of the arms to prevent the heads lodging in the corners of the machine.
The upper floor is placed as far below the top of the box as to form a hopper of sufficient size and depth to receive the clover head; and the lower floor is arranged and secured near the bottom of the box.
The machine being put in operation and the heads of clover placed in the upper partof the box or hopper they are made to pass through the oblong aperture in the upper floor by means of the feeder and are met by the roughened surfaces of the upper arms which carry the heads around between the roughened surfaces of the upper and middle floors where the seed is separated from the heads. The whole then passes through the aperture in the middle floor and is carried around by the lower arm between this floor and the lower floor, where the. opera-- tion is completed. The whole then falls through the opening in the lower floor. The seed is afterward separated from the chaff by a fan in the usual manner.
The invention claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent consists in- The combination and arrangement of the roughened floors and arms for hulling clover seed in the manner before described; also the construction of the machine in two parts opening on hinges in order to get at the inj terior of the machine when required as before described.
