PATENT QFFICE.
OF BRUSSELS, BELGIUM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 732,944, dated July '7, 1903. Application filed March 1'7, I903. Serial No. 148,151. (No model.)
To all ZUhOWb it ntay concern:
Be it known that I, CAMILLE J ENATZY, Fils, engineer, a subject of the King of the Belgians, residing at 222 Rue du Progres, Brussels, in the Kingdom of Belgium, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Transmission Devices for Motor -Vehicles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawing, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which forms a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a device for the progressive transmission of the effort of the motor to the wheels of a motor-vehicle of any kind.
The object of the invention is to permit of dispensing with speed-change gear and to provide a transmission device of great flexibility and smoothness, whereby the resistance of the road and the power of the motor may be coordinated at each moment and with exactitude, while at the same time the motor is completely protected from shocks and vibration.
The device is characterized by magnetic driving-gear arranged between the shaft of the motor and the driving-shaft for the wheels of the vehicle by means, for example, of a field-magnet crown rigidly fixed upon the shaft of the motor and acting upon an armature rigidly mounted upon the driving-shaft for the wheels of the vehicle, the energy requisite for this driving being supplied to the field-magnet crown by the current of a dynamo operated by the motor.
The device is diagrammatically represented in the accompanying drawing.
Upon the shaft A of the motor B is rigidly mounted in place of the usual fly-wheel a fieldmagnet crown 0, carried by a cross-piece D, of suitable material. WVithin the field-magnet crown C is arranged an armature E, appropriately wound and disposed, which is rigidly fixed upon the shaft F, which acts directly upon the axle of the driving-wheels G of the vehicle by means of bevel-pinions H or any other convenient means.
The current of a dynamo I, operated by the mot-or B, is conducted to the coils of the fieldmagnet crown C by collector-rings J, upon which rub the brushes K, which are connected to the poles of the source of electricity I. One of these brushes is directly connected to the source of electricity, while the other is connected to this source by the intermediary of a switch L and a very elongated rheostat controlled by the driver of the vehicle.
The operation of this device will be readily understood. WV-hen the motor is running and the field-magnet circuit is open, the motor rotates with the field-magnet crown without driving the vehicle. VVhe'n the driver closes the field-magnet circuit with interposition of the resistances M, a magnetic field is established in the crown O, the armature E is driven, and the vehicle starts very slowly, owing to the weakness of the field. In proportion as the driver diminishes the resistance M the velocity of the armature E will tend to approach that of the field-magnet crown O, and the velocity of the vehicle will attain its maximum at the moment of the saturation of the field. On the other hand, as the field is weakened by the interposition of the resistances M in the circuit supplying the crown O the velocity will diminish and the armature will be abandoned to its own inertia as soon as the field-magnet circuit is interrupted.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is- 1. In combination with the running-gear, a dynamo, a motor operating same, a fieldmagnet crown operated by said motor, a drivin g-shaft, an armature carried by the dri vingshaft, and rheostatic means between said dynamo and field whereby to gradually increase and decrease the speed of the armature.
2. In combination with a running-gear, a I
dynamo, a motor operating same, arevolving field operated by said motor, a driving-shaft, an armature carried thereby, and means between said dynamo and field whereby to increase and decrease the current so that the armature may rotate at variable speeds.
3. In combination with a running-gear, a dynamo, a motor operating same, a revolving field operated by said motor, a driving-shaft, an armature carried thereby, and a rheostat thereby, a driving-shaft connected to the driving-wheels,an armature carried by said shaft, a dynamo driven by the motor, and a rheostat between said dynamo and field whereby the armature may rotate at different speed with relation to the field.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
