PATENTED JULY 7, 1903.-
A. DOBSON.
PISTON VALVE RING.
APPLICATION I'ILED.MAY 10, 1902.

Patented July 7, 1903.-
PATENT OFFICE.
ADAM DOBSON, OF BELFAST, IRELAND.
PISTON-VALVE RING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 732,837, dated July "7, 1903.
Application filed May 10 1902.
description of my invention, such as will en able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to the construction and arrangement of the piston-valve rings and piston-rings of a steam-engine; and it consists in the use of a slit ring having a lug or projection formed on the inside thereof at each side of the slit, which lugs or projections engage in a groove or slot in the body of the piston-valve or piston, whereby the valve-ring or piston-ring can be adjusted so as to prevent undue pressure against the sides of the valve-chamber or cylinder, while the valve-ring or piston-ring by means of the slit adjusts itself automatically to any taper in the barrel of the valve-chamber or cylinder. The ring is held against the steam-tight face of the valve by a wave spring or. other springs.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, 1 shall now proceed to refer to the sheet of drawings hereunto annexed, the same letters of reference indicating the same or corresponding parts of my improvements on both figures thereon.
FigureIis an elevation, partlyin section, of
a piston-valve, showing the slit ring at top,
with the body of thevalve indicated by dotted lines, and the ring at bottom having a lug or projection at each side of the slit, the body Serial No. 107,039. (No model.)
of thevalve with a groove or slot, the flange of the valve, and a wave-spring and tonguepiece to hold the ring in position, all in section; and Fig. II is a plan, partly in section, showing the slit ring with lugs or projections engaged in a groove or slot formed in the body of the valve.
(1 is the ring, arranged with a slit b and with lugs or projections ct a.
c is the body of the valve, provided with a groove or slot 0, the end walls of which engage the lugs or projections a a.
cl is a wave-spring.
e is a tongue-piece, and f is the steam-tight flange of the valve, carrying the valve and piston-valve ring.
The end walls of the slot 0' by their ongagement with the lugs a a prevent undue expansion of the ring a, and so prevents undue pressure upon the sides of the cylinder. The slit 19, however, permits a limited contraction of the ring a, which therefore can automatically adjust itself to any slight inequalities on the surface of the cylinder-walls.
Having now particularly described and ascertain ed the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is- The combination of a piston having a slot in the body thereof, and a slit ring having separated lugs rigid therewith one on each side of the slit to project into said slot and engage the end walls thereof when the ring is expanded, and said slot permitting the ends of the slit ring and the lugs to approach each other, substantially as and for the pur* pose specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. I
ADAM DOBSON.
