CHARLES CLOUKEY, OF ST. JOSEPH, MISSOURI.
SAFETY SET-COLLAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 732,714, dated July 7, 1903.
Application filed March 12, 1903.
key acting in'a helical seat eccentrically formed in both parts of the body of thecollar and'the primary object of my improvement is to provide a set-collar without a set-screw of any kind in order, first, to eliminate dan-u which may be made hollow or concaved on its seating surface to resist very heavy strains, and, seventh, to provide a key which cannot work out and get lost, and thereby throw the collar back into the dangerous class, as is the case with the safety set-screw collars. l attain these objects by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an end view of the collar. Fig. 2 is a side view of the collar in place on the shaft, and Fig. 3 is a surface view of the key. Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In Fig. 1, a represents the body of the collar, and b the key-seat; e, the holes to receive Serial No. 147,532. (No model) ical tapered key, which is relieved or narrowed on the inside of each end at d d to facilitate its entering the key-seats in the body of the collar.
Two details of construction, as shown in Fig. 2, are necessary for the successful operation of the collar, and consist of, first, dividing thecollar in such a manner that the keyseat shall be cut at its deepest part, leaving one-half of the seat in each piece of the body of the collar, and, second, relieving the inner. faces of the collar, so that the body may be crowded up on the key without quite touching its parts together. These two points are shown at f in Fig. 2.
The difi'erent parts of the collar are assembled on the shaft by first putting on one part of the body of the collar blank side first, then following with the key and the other part of the body seat side first. Each end of the key is entered in its respective key-seat and both parts of the body turned up on the key until sufficiently tight.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A safety set-collar comprisinga two-part body having a helical seat eccentrically formed therein, equal parts of said seat being formed in eachpart of said body, and a tapered key operating in said helical seat, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
