To all whom it may concern;

Be it known that I, LUTHER E. SHINN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Mixing Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.

This invention relates to mixing devices, and has special reference to such devices used for the purpose of mixing or heating eggs, cream, &c. device of this character which shall be of simple and economical manufacture, easily manipulated, and wherein the mixture will be contained in one receptacle and prevented, as

far as possible, from adhering to the cover or walls in such manner as to interfere with the thorough mixture of the material.

The invention also comprehends other features of advantage, which will be referred to more in detail hereinafter.

In the drawings, in which'l have illustrated forms which the invention may take in practice, Figure 1 is a front view of a mixer embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 represents a suitable receptacle, the bottom of which in this instance tapers to an egg-shaped bowl. The receptacle is supported upon a base 2 and is provided with a cover 3, adapted to be conveniently fitted to the top of the receptacle. In the cover 3 is mounted a central shaft 4, upon the end of which, below the cover, one or more heaters 5 6 are mounted. These heaters are shown as comprising loops of wire, the ends of which are sprung into holes in the end of shaft 4 or otherwise separably attached, and which are bent alternately outward and inward to form horizontal arms, the lower end being shaped to conform to the bottom of the receptacle. Where two or more heaters are employed, they are preferably located in planes at angles to each other, as shown, and so formed that the arms of the several heaters are staggered with respect to each other-that is, the arms of one heater are located opposite the space between the arms of the other beater. The lower end of each heater is in the form of a double loop and has a notch or offset 11 at Its object is to provide a about the center thereof, (see Figs. 1 and 2,) so that when the heaters are put together the notches hold the lower ends in engagement with each other. heaters can be easily separated from the shaft and from each other for packing or cleaning and do not get out of alinement. Preferably, also, the inner bends of the wires of the several heaters are separated from each other. Upon the cover 3 is carried suitable means for revolving shaft 4, such as the crank 7, connected with shaft 4 by wheel 8 and pinion 9, mounted on shaft 4.

In operation the material to be mixed or beaten is placed in the receptacle and the cover placed thereon. As the cover carries shaft 4, the beaters,and the gearing and crank for revolving the heaters, the simple act of placing the cover upon the receptacle will insort the heaters in the mixture and in all respects make'the device ready for operation. Whether the material be enough to fill the receptacle or not it will not be splashed upon the cover or caught in corners of the receptacle and thus not mixed, because owing to the horizontal motion of the heaters there will be no tendency to splash upon the cover, and owing to the tapering eg shaped bottom all the material will gravitate to the bottom and be mixed by the heaters, which conform to the shape of the bottom. I

It will be seen that the device above described may be modified in various respects without departing from the invention, and I therefore desire it to be understood that I do not herein limit myself to the specific construction shown.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- V 1.
