SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 732,57 6, dated June 30, 1903. Application filed December 9, 1901 Serial No. 85i264- N mod l- To all, whom zit may concern Be it known that 1, JAMES MILLS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Wilmington, Del.aware,have in vented certain Improvement-s in Pressure Apparatus for Molding-Flasks, of which the following is aspeci 'fication.
Myinvention relates to pressure apparatus for molders flasks, one object of my invention being to arrange such apparatus in connection with a supporting structure, preferably a movable one, whereby all strain or movement of the pressure-platen will be taken up directly by the pressure apparatus, and hence will not affect in any way the supporting structure.
A further object of my invention is to so arrange the supporting structure with relation to the pressure apparatus carried thereby that the latter may be moved to any desired position, while a further object of my invention is to mount the supporting structure so that it may be moved from place to place in the molding-shop.
My invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an end elevation of my improved pressure apparatus. Fig. 2 is a sectional view illustratinga detail of iny invention, and Figs. 3 and 4are diagram views illustrating further details of my invention.
In carrying out my invention I provide a suitable crane structure,which may be mounted upon a traveling car or truck adapted to rails on the floor of the molding-room or arranged to travel overhead and carrying suitable cylinders, into which motive fluid under pressure may be admitted for the purpose of moving apiston within the same and cause a pressure-platen carried by the piston-rod to engage the sand within the flask or to engage the cope of the flask.
In Fig. l of the drawings, 1 represents a suitable car or bogie-truck having wheels 2, adapted to the track formed by the rails 3. Mounted upon said caris a crane structure comprising a standard or column 4, which may be made inany suitable manner, being properly braced, as shown at5, and this standard is arranged so as to be rotatable with relation to the truck, having by preference an antifriction-bearing 5 disposed between its base and the truck, so that its movement of rotation upon the same will have as little friction as possible. Carried by this standard the standard and forming with said standard a structure substantially the same as a crane.
Carried by the beams are the pressure-cylinders7, which are supported by means of hooks or other members 8, depending from the movable carriages 9, adapted to travel upon said beams. Each of the cylinders 7 is provided with a piston 10 and piston-rod 11, and suit- ,1 preferably connect the piston-rods to the platen in the manner shown in Fig; 2 by providing the end of the piston-rod with an en-- largement14,substantially sphericalin shape, adaptedto a recess in the upper portion of said plate and having a'confining-collar 15,
whereby a balhand-socket joint is provided. Under ordinary conditions the pressure of the platen upon the cope or sand would be limited by the weight of the apparatus or the weight of the cylinder, because as soon as i such pressure overcame-this weight the cylinder or apparatus would be raised instead of the platen being lowered. For the purpose of preventing such action I provide means for connecting the cylinder with the flask or its support or some other fixed structure adjacent to the flask, whereby greater pressure may be applied by the platen, which pressure will be taken up by these connecting means. In Fig. 1 I have shown two forms of such connecting means. Oarried'byeach cylinder, preferably at the upper portion of the same, are rods or cross-bars 16, which are provided with eyes, hooks, or other securing means 17 at their outer ends. On the'righthand side of the apparatus (shown in Fig. 1) chains 18 are shown connecting these bars 16 with the handles 19 of the flasks, suitable "are the-beams 6, extending on both sides of shackles 20 beingprovided wherebythechains may be readily connected to the handles at all times. On the left-hand side of the apparatus I have shown rods 21, provided with suitable shackles 20 at their lower ends, which rods may be used in lieu of the chains.
The whole apparatus may be transferred from any portion of the molding-shop to any point desired, and double rows of flasks may be pressed by the same in succession, or it may be mounted at a fixed point and rotated within a circular row of flasks and press the same successively.
Instead of having a double form of apparatus, as shown in the drawings, I may employ a single cylinder which may run from end to end of the beams 6, the standard of the crane structure being so arranged as to permit the cylinder to pass throughit. I may also use a cylinder movable on one side only of the standard and mount on the opposite side of the same a suitable counterbalance. The cylinders may be carried directly by the beams instead of being mounted upon the carriages, as shown.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a diagram of a modified form of apparatus in which the cylinder 7 is carried directly bya truck 1, which alsosupports a crane structure 4. For the purpose of imparting the movement of the piston within the cylinder to the platen 13 I provide a lever 22, which is fulcru med to said standard at 23. This lever is slotted at each end, as shown, in order to permit ready movement of the presser-rod 11 and platen. Wit-h a structure of this character it is preferable to guide the rod or bar supporting the platen, and I have illustrated in the drawings said rod as passing through the upper portion of the crane structure at 24 and through another guide 25, carried by the truck, which supports the whole structure. The flask,its support, or any fixed structure adjacent thereto is connected with the projecting portion of the crane by means of rods 21 This modification permits aself-contained structure of even simpler design than that illustrated in Fig. 1.
In Fig. 4 I have shown a diagram of a form of apparatus adapted to an overhead track or runway. In this structure 26 represents the rails, which may be supported in any suitable manner, upon which rails are mounted wheels 27, carrying the beam 28. This beam supports a cylinder 7", which is preferably suspended from a suitable carrier 9, as in Fig. 1. In this form of apparatus the beam moving on the rails and the cylinder moving with relation to the beam provides a wide range of adjustment for the cylinder. This cylinder, as in the form shown in Fig. 1, is provided with the connecting means comprising the rods 21, whereby it may be attached to the flask, its support, or some fixed structure adjacent to the same when in the act of pressing said flask.
The pipes for conveying the motive fluid to and from the cylinder may be arranged in any suitable manner. In the present instance in Fig. 1 they are shown as supported by suitable brackets secured to the central standard. I
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a pressure apparatus for moldingflasks, the combination of a movable cylinder, a support for the same, a pressure-platen controlled by said cylinder and adapted to act upon a flask, and flexible connecting means between the flask and the cylinder.
2. In a pressure apparatus for moldingflasks, the combination of a movable cylinder, a support for the same, a pressure-platen controlled by said cylinder, a piston and piston-rod within said cylinder, the latterbeing connected to the pressure-platen, said platen adapted to act upon a flask, and a flexible connection between said cylinder and the flask, substantially as described.
3. In a pressure apparatus for moldingflasks, the combination of a portable supporting structure, a cylinder carried thereby, a pressure-platen controlled by said cylinder, a piston and piston-rod within said cylinder, the latter being connected to the pressureplaten, said platen adapted to act upon a flask, and a flexible connection carried by the cylinder for attachment to the flask, substantially as described.

In a pressure apparatus for moldingflasks, the combination of a portable rotating support, a movable cylinder carried thereby, a pressure-platen controlled by said cylinder, a piston and piston-rod within said cylinder, the latter being connected to the pressureplaten, said platen being adapted to act upon a flask, and a flexible connection carried by the cylinder for attachment to the flask, substantially as described.
5. In a pressure apparatus for moldingflasks, the combination of a portable supporting structure, a cylinder carried thereby, a pressure-platen controlled by said cylinder, a piston and piston-rod within said cylinder, the latter being connected to the pressureplaten, said platen adapted to act upon a flask, a cross-bar carried by the cylinder, and a flexible connection carried by said cross-bar for attachment to the flask, substantially as described.
