SIDNEY C. HILLS, OF TORRINGTQN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE TURNER 8r SEYMOUR MFG. CO., OF TORRINGTON, CONNECTICUT, A
CORPORATION.
LATHE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 732,558, dated June 30, 1903.
Application filed March 2, 1903;
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, SIDNEY O, HILLS, of Torrington, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lathes; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the numerals of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
Figure 1, a top or plan view of a portion of a lathe of usual construction, showing my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2, a front View of the same, showing a drill and support therefor in connection therewith; Fig. 3, a sectional view on the line a b of Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a plan view of a trans versely-movable slide, showing the pinion carried by the longitudinal. slide in engagement with the rack;- Fig. 5, a sectional view on the line 0 cl of Fig. 1; Fig. 6, a broken perspective view of one;sideQ of the transversely-movable slide; Fig. 7, aplan view of my improved cutter, showing it as presented to the rod preparatory to cutting the same; Fig. 8, a similar View showing the cutter turned by its post and as about completing its work and preparatory to cutting the formed article from the end of the rod.
This invention relates to an improvement in lathes, or, as they are sometimes termed, screw machines that is, machines in which a rod is fed in at predetermined intervals and given a desired form by cuttersthe object of the invention being to arrange-and operate a cutter which will produce shapesrequiring deep cuts with great ease; and the invention consists in arranging a cutter upon a post which is turned as the cutter advances toward the work and in certain detailsof construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and particularly recited in theclaims.
In illustrating my invention I have shown only so much of the lathe mechanism as will be necessary for a clear understanding of my invention.
The chuck 2, which is mounted for rotation in the head-stock 3, is revolved through the medium of a pulley 4 in the usual manner,
Serial No. 145,676. (No model.)
1 with the bearing 5,-may be employed. In the bed 9 is a transversely-movable slide 10, this slide being moved by the engagement of a projection 11 on an arm 12, secured to the slide, with a cam 13, mounted upon'a shaft 14, arranged parallel with the shaft of the workholding chuck 2. This cam is intended to slowly draw the slide inward and at a predetermined time by a lug or projection 15 move the slide outward. This slide is formed with a longitudinal undercut recess 16, in one side of which a rack 17 is secured by screws 18. r In the recess 16 is a longitudinally-m ovable slide 19, adapted to be moved back and forth by a lever 20, turned by a grooved cam 21 upon the shaft 14. In the slide 19 a vertically-arranged sleeve 22 is arranged, and extending upward through this sleeve is a post 23, having at its lower end a pinion 24,
which stands below the face of the slide 19 and meshes with the rack 17. The upper end 25 ofthis post is reduced in diameter and upon it is mounted a cutter 26, which is keyed to it so as to be turned therewith, the cutter bearing upon the upper end of the sleeve 22. Upon the cutter over the end of the post a washer 27 is placed and held in place by nuts 28, which also hold the post in the sleeve.
The transversely-movable slide being thrown outward by the lug in the cam 13, a rod 29 is fed forward through the chuck 2, and when clamped in position the drill 7 or other tool may be advanced to operate upon its end. At the same time the cam 13 draws the slide 10 inward and moves the cutter 26, which, as herein shown, is formed with two cutting projections 30, toward the rod 29 and cuts two grooves 31 therein. As the cutter advances toward the work the longitudinal slide 19 is moved by the lever through the cam 21 and as it advances the pinion. 24, engaging with the rack 17, turns the post 23, and hence rotates the cutter, which at one side is formed with a cut-off point 32, the edge of the cutter between the projections and the cut-off point 32 being of a form to.
give the required shape to the article being cut.
As herein shown it is a tip having a rounded head. After the cutter has been turned to sever the formed portion from the red the slide 10 is thrown outward by the cam 13, which removes the cutter away from the rod, permitting the rod to be fed forward. At the same time the slide 19 is drawn backward, which turns the cutter to its normal position.
It will be understood that the form of the cutter corresponds to the shape of the article to be formed, and, it is apparent that the movement of the slides might be arranged in various ways, according to the construction of the lathe. I therefore do not wish to be understood as limiting the invention to the exact construction shown.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination in a lathe, of a slide movable transversely the bed thereof carrying a rack, a longitudinally-movable slide in said transverse slide and carrying a post with a pinion at its lower end in engagement with the said rack, and a cutter mounted on said post and adapted to be turned by the advancing movement of the longitudinally-movable slide, substantially as described.
2. The combination in a lathe, of a slide movable transversely the bed thereof, a rack fixed thereon, a longitudinally-movable slide mounted in said transverse slide, a verticallyarranged sleeve mounted in said longitudinally-movable slide, a post extending upward through said sleeve and having a pinion at its lower end in engagement with said rack, a cutter mounted on said post and connected thereto so as to be turned thereby, and means for automatically moving said slides, substantially as described.
The combination in a lathe, of a slide movable transversely the bed thereof, a rack mounted in said slide, a longitudinally-movable slide mounted in said transverse slide, a vertically-arranged sleeve mounted in said longitudinal slide, a post extending upward through said sleeve and provided with a pinion at its lower end in position to mesh with said rack, a cutter bearing upon the upper end of said sleeve and fixed to said post so as to be turned thereby, a shaft and cams on said shalt adapted to operate said slides, whereby the cutter is turned on its axis as it approaches the work, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribin g witnesses.
