SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 732,428, dated June so, 1903.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALLAN L. MoGREcoR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in-Vehicle-Gear; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in vehicle-gear, and the object in view is the production of one section of a fifth-wheel formed integral with and continuous of the hounds.

With this and further objects in View the invention consists of hounds formed of suitable material extending forwardly and curved to form the upper half of the fifth-wheel, said curvedportions being formed with suitable abutments for engaging and being rigidly secured to the head-block.

It further consists of hounds made up of angle-bars bent to the desired shape extending forwardly and curved so that the horizontal web thereof will form the upper half of the fifth-wheel. I

It also consists in certain other novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a pair of hounds and contiguous parts of a vehiclegear embodying the features of the present invention. Fig. 2 represents a similar View on a reduced scale and illustrating the surrounding parts to the fifth-wheel.

In the construction of vehicles it is of course desirable to combine as far as possible lightness with strength and durability, while securing simplicity to the greatest extent, and I believe that by the structure depicted by the accompanying drawings I am able to combine these valuable features to a great extent.

In carrying out the invention as set forth in the said drawings I employ hounds 1 1, formed of angle-bars, each having a vertical and a horizontal web. The hounds I extend rearwardly and have their rear ends clamped to an axle 2 by means of clips 3 3 and 4 4, the vertical web of each of said angle-bars being Applicationfiled September 25, 1902. Serial No. 124,842. (No'modeh) bent to form an abutment contacting with the front face of said axle and receiving a securing-bolt of the clip 4. The horizontal Web of each of said angle-bars passes beneath the said axle and receives the retaining-clip 3. Suitable braces 5 5 are preferably employed for connecting the hounds l with the axle 2, and additional braces 6 6 connect said hounds with the reach '7. Each angle-bar forming one of the hounds 1 extends forwardly and is attached tothe reach 7 and then curves outwardly, as at 8, whereby the upper half of the fifth-wheel is produced, the horizontal web of said bar of course forming the contacting surface for resting upon the lower half 9 of the said fifth-wheel. The vertical Web of each 'of said angle-bars is abbreviated and bent to form an abutting wall 10 for contacting with a suitable head-block 11 for being attached thereto. The horizontal web of each of said angle-bars extends beneath the said block and is bent upwardly, forming an abutment 12, whereby the said block may be firmly clamped between the abutments formed by said webs.

In connection with the elements just described I preferably employ suitable braces 13 and let, each of which is apertured at its forward end for receiving the king-bolt, which retains the parts in their relative positions, as is 00111111011111 the art.

By the construction described I am enabled to secure rigidity, strength, durability, and lightness, and although I have specifically set forth the details of a particular embodiment of the present structure, yet it will be understood that I do not mean to limit myself to the minor features of construction, but shall feel at liberty to deviate therefrom to any degree within the spirit and scope of the invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. Ahound fora vehicle formed of an anglebar, and having its forward end bent to constitute a portion of a fifth-wheel, one of the webs of said bar being formed shorter than the other and provided with an engaging abutment, substantially as described.

2. In a device of the class described, the combination with an axle, a reach and a headblock, of a pair of hounds having their rear ends connected to said axle and being attached to said reach along their length, the forward ends of said hounds being curved in opposite directions for forming a portion of the fifth-wheel, abutments being carried by said hounds for engaging the opposite faces of said head-block, substantiallyas described.

3. In a device of the class described, the combination wit-h a suitable axle, a reach and head-block, of hounds attached to said axle and reach, the material forming each of said hounds extending forwardly from the point of attachment to said reach curving outwardly and laterally therefrom and forming a portion of a fifth-wheel, abutments being carried ALLAN L.
