SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 732,402, dated June 30, 1903.

To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. EDE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cobden, in the county of Union and State of Illinois, have invented certainnew and useful Im-l provements in Clutches, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact-description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a clutch for intermittently rotating a shaft upon which it is mounted.
The invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure I is a perspective view of my clutch with the engaging pulley omitted. Fig. II is aperspective view of the clutch engaging pulley. Fig. III is a view, partly in elevation and partly in section, of the retaining-yoke ofthe clutch. Fig. IV is a horizontal section taken on line IV IV, Fig. III. Fig. V is a vertical section of the clutch.A Fig. VI is a perspective view of the stop-block which receives the vslide-bolt in the clutch-collar. Fig. VII is a perspective view of the slide-bolt.

I3 designates a pulley loosely mounted on thedriven shaft 2, the hub of which is provided with an annular iiange 14.
l5 designates dogs set into the hub of the pulley 13 (see Figs. II and V) and projecting into the space within the annular flange 14.
1G is a clutch-collar fixed t0 the driven shaft 2 by a key 17, (see Fig. I,) iitting in the keywayof said shaft, and also by a setscrew I8. (See Fig. V.) Slidablypositioned in the clutch-collar 16 is a bolt 19, the outer end of which is adapted to be projected toward the loose pulley 13 to be engaged by the dogs 15. This slide-bolt is provided at its inner. end with a laterally-extending arm 20, that protrudes througha slot 2l in the perimeter of the clutch-collar. I
y22 (see Fig. V) is an expansion-spring located within the clutch-collar and adapted to bear against a finger 23, carried by the slidebolt 19, for the purpose of4 projecting said slide-bolt in an outward direction when the bolt is free from the restraining means by which it is held inwardly, in a manner to be hereinafter set forth in connection with the operation of the clutch.
, IVlienv in the practical use of the 'clutch the shaft 2 is being driven thereby, the retaining-yoke 4 is in elevated position, as seen in dotted lines'in Fig. V, and the slide-bolt 19 .is held in projectedposition, as seen in dotted lines,- by the spring 22 bearingv thereagainst. It will be seen that with the parts `in the position stated the loose pulley 13 continually engages the clutch-collar through the medium of one of its dogs l5 and that the shaft will be driven as long as the parts remain in such positions. IVhen it is desired to throw the clutch-collar out of engagement with the loose (See Figs. III and IV.)

For the purpose of preventing sudden jar of the driven shaft and its clutch I provide a cushion-pin 24. (See Figs. III and IV and dotted lines, Fig. V.) This cushion-pin is slidably positioned in a barrel 25, extending horizontally from the retaining-yoke 4 and containing a spring 2G, located in the rear of said pin. The forward end of the pin projects into a positionin the rear of the lower end of the stop-block 9, so that when the projecting arm 20 of the slide-bolt 19 passes into the rear of said stop-block it will strike said cushion-pin and be cushioned in its stoppage. In order to prevent retrograde rotation of the clutch-collar when the cushion-pin 24 is engaged, I provide a stop-pin 27, seated in the clutch-collar and backed by an expansionspriug 2 The outer end of this stop-pin projects beyond the end face of the clutchcollar opposin g the retainin g-yoke 4c, and when the slide-bolt arm 2O reaches the cushion-pin 21 the stop-pin passes the stop-plate 12 on the face of the retaining-yoke and enters the recess 11 in said yoke, as seen in Fig. IV and dotted lines, Fig. III, where it serves to hold the clutch-collar from retrograde movement.
I claim as my invention- 1. Ina clutch, the combination with a Shaft, of a collar mounted on said shaft, a slotted retaining-yoke located alongside of said collar, and loosely fitted to said shaft for sliding movement thereon, a slide-bolt in said collar for engagement with said retaining-yoke, and a loose pulley having means for engaging said slide-bolt, substantially as set forth.
2. In a clutch, the combinationwith a shaft, of a collar mounted on said shaft, a slotted retaining-yoke located alongside of said eollar and loosely fitted to said shaft for sliding movement thereon, a slide-bolt in said collar for engagement with said retaining-yoke, a loose pulley, and a dog carried by said pulley for engagement with said slide-bolt, substantially as set forth.
3. In a clutch, the combination with a shaft,
of a collar mounted on said sha-ft, a slide-bolt in said collar, a slotted retaining yoke or member located alongside of said collar, and loosely fitted to said shaft for sliding movement thereon, a slide-bolt, and a loose pulley having means for engaging said slide-bolt, substantially as set forth.
4. In a clutch, the combination with a shaft, of a collar mounted on said shaft, a springpressed slide-bolt located in said collar and having an arm protruding through the perimeter of the collar, a slotted retaining member located alongside of said collar and loosely fitted to said shaft for sliding movement thereon, and a stop-block carried by said retaining member to be engaged by the arm of said slide-bolt, substantially as set forth.
5. In a clutch, the combination with a shaft, of a clutch-collar mounted on said shaft, a slide-bolt located in said collar and having au arm projecting through the perimeter of the collar, aslotted retaining member located alongside of said collar and loosely fitted to said shaft for sliding movement thereon, and a stop-block having a lower inclined end to be engaged by the arm of said slide-bolt, substantially as set forth.
6. In a clutch, the combination of a shaft, a collar mounted on said shaft, a support for said shaft, a slotted retaining member located alongside of said collar, and loosely fitted to said shaft for sliding movement thereon, and a lug carried by said retainingmember to cngage said supportto limit the movement of said retaining member, substantially as set forth.
7. In aclutch, the combination with ashaft, of a collar mounted on said shaft, a springpressed slide-bolt located in said collar and having an arm proj eeting therefrom, a retaining member located alongside of said collar, a stop carried by said retaining member, and a cushion-pin to receive the arm of said slidebolt when it is engaged by said stop, substantially as set forth.
S. In a clutch, the combination with a shaft, of a collar mounted on said shaft, a springpressed slide-bolt located in said collar and having an arm projecting therefrom, a retaining member, a stop carried by said retaining member to be engaged by said slide-arm, and a stop-pin carried by said collar to engage said retaining member when said slide-bolt arm engages said stop, substantially as set forth.
