: PATENT OFFICE.
HOLDER FOR PILED SLIPS OR SHEE'T S OF PAPER, BAGS, OR THE LIKE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 732,352, dated June 30, 1903.
Application filed November 21, 1902. Serial No. 132,287. (No model.)
To alt whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM HUDSON, tobaccon'ist, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 50 Newington'Green, Stoke Newington,in the county of London, England, have invented a new or Improved Holder for Piled Slips or Sheets of Paper, Bags, or the Like, of which the following is a specificae tion, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon-that is to say The invention relates to a new or improved holder for piled slips or sheets of paper, bags, or the like.
It is the practice in shops and other places at the present time to keep slips or sheets of paper, bags, or the like which are used for wrapping up goods in a piled or loose condition upon the counter, bench, or like place, and it is therefore difficult to remove a single sheet from the top of the pile, added to which by reason of the frictional resistance or suckerlike action between the sheets it frequently happens that several are displaced by the attempt to remove the top one, with the result that the paper becomes distributed over the counter, thus giving it an untidy appearance and causing considerable trouble in collectingandreplacingthe disturbedsheets. Moreover, where slips or sheets of paper, bags, or the like of different sizes are employed said difierent sizes become mixed, and it is a matter of considerable difficulty to pick out the particular size required, and when it is desired to dust the counter or the like it is necessary to collect and rearrange the same, involving considerable work and waste of time.
Now the object of the present invention is to provide a device which will hold slips or sheets of paper, bags, or the like in a piled form ready for use and control them in such manner that when the top sheet is slid off the pile those underneath will be prevented from following, thereby obviating the difficulties above pointed out.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section taken on the line A A of Fig. 2 of a paper-holder-embodying the present improvements. Fig. 2 is a plan thereof. Fig. 3 is a front end elevation thereof. Fig. 4 is a detail view of part of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a vertical longitudinal section taken on the line B B of Fig. (i, illustrating a slight modification in the method of mounting the flanges or stops. Fig.6 is a plan thereof. Fig. 7 is a front end elevation thereof. Fig. Sis adetail View of part of Fig. 5. Fig. 9 is a detail View of part of Fig. 7. Fig. 10 is a vertical longitudinal section taken on the line 00 of Fig. 11, illustrating a further slight modification. Fig. 11 is a plan thereof, and Fig. 12 is a front end elevation thereof.
In the several figures like parts are indicated by similar reference-nu merals, and Figs.
4 and 8 to 12, inclusive, are drawn to an in creased scale with respect to the other figures of the drawings.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 4, 1 represents a tray or box constructed of sheet metal, or it might be of other suitable material, in which the piled sheets or slips of paper 11 are stored, and this tray or box 1 is formed closed at the back end, but open atthe front end thereof. The top edges of the sides of the tray or box 1 are formed with rolls or beads 2, constituting guides, and embracing said rolls or beads 2 are slides or clips 3, carrying flanges or stops 4, so that the same maybe adjusted longitudinally of the tray or box 1. Each fiange or stop 4 is provided with a longitudinal slot 5, in which slides a weight 6 for the purpose hereinafter described. flanges or stops 4 are preferably arranged to incline toward the front of the tray or box 1.
In order to render the action of the device more perfect, the sheets of paper or the like 11 are also controlled from their rear ends by the following means: Said controlling means consists of a vertical post 7, fixed upon a loose horizontal plate 8, constituting a foot or base, which when in use rests upon the bottom of the .tray or box 1 and is covered and held by the pile of slips of paper or the like 11. Upon the vertical post 7 is mounted with capability of sliding vertically and rotating horizontally an arm or finger 9, and upon the under side of the arm or finger 9 and at the outerextremity thereof is fixed a small disk or surface of india-rubber or the like 10. The sheets or slips of paper 11 are piled in the tray or box 1 behind and against the flanges 4 under the weights 6 and over the horizonal plate or foot 7 8 of the post 7, and the arm or finger 9 is al- The lowed to rest with its rubber disk or the like upon the top of the pile 11.
When it is required to remove a sheet of paper from the pile 11 in the tray or box 1, the top sheet is lifted by its projecting front edge and removed,.orit is drawn forward by the finger pressed upon the top thereof, when the resistance of the flanges or stops 4 will be overcome and that sheet only will follow the finger, the rest of the pile being held back 'by said flanges or stops 4, assisted by the weights 6 and the finger 9 of the controlling means, which by the action of its rubber disk 10 causes a drag upon the rear end of the top sheet of said pile 11, and when the rear end of said sheet has passed beyond said rubber disk 10 the latter descends upon the next sheet, thereby assisting to hold the rest of the pile in place.
In order to improve the action of the arm or finger 9, the weight thereof may be increased by the addition of separate perforated weights, such as 9, slid onto the vertical post 7, so as to rest upon the arm or finger 9, as shown in Fig. 1.
In the example given at Figs. 5 to 9 the device is similar to that hereinbefore described, except that the tray or box 1 is constructed of wood, and in lieu of the guides consisting of rolls or heads 2 said guides are formed by rods 2. The rods or guides 2 are fixed upon the interior of the sides of the tray or box 1 longitudinally and preferably slightly beneath the top edges thereof by means of fittings 2, and the flanges or stops 4 are carried by sleeves 3, which embrace the guiderods 2 and slide thereon.
In the example given at Figs. 10 to 12 the guide-rods 2 and fittings 2 are dispensed with and flanges or stops formed as vertical posts 4, mounted in fittings 4:,fixed upon the tray or box 1, are employed, and the Weights 6 are perforated and adapted to slide upon the vertical posts 4. In other respects the device shown in this example is identical with that lastly hereinbefore shown and described.
By the peculiar construction above described the device is rendered adjustable to slips or sheets of paper, bags, or the like of different lengths.
It will be obvious that the details of construction of the device maybe further modified without departing from the spirit of the invention.
By the means hereinbefore described asimple and inexpensive device is obtained in which slips or sheets of paper, bags, or the like may be stored in a neat and compact form ready for use and which will insure the abstraction of one sheet only at a time.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of the said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is- 1. In a holder for piled slips, sheets or bags of paper or the like a tray or box, guides arranged longitudinally of the upper edges of the sides of said tray flanges or stops at their upper ends mounted with capability of sliding upon the guides with the flanges suspended upon the inner faces of the sides of the tray and weights adapted to slide upon said flanges or stops and rest upon the pile of sheets substantially as herein shown and described and for the purpose stated.
2. In a holder for piled slips sheets or bags of paper or the like a tray or box flanges or stops adjustably mounted upon the inner faces of the sides of said tray near to the front so that the pile of papers will lie behind the same, a foot or base plate resting upon the bottom of the tray and extending under the pile of papers a vertical post fixed to the foot or base plate at the rear side thereof and a perforated and weighted arm or finger loosely mounted on said post and provided with a surface of rubber or the like adapted to rest upon said pile substantially as herein shown and described and for the purpose stated.
3. In a holder for slips sheets or bags of paper or the like, a tray or box, flanges or stops mounted upon the inner faces of the sides of said tray near to the front thereof so that the pile of papers will lie behind the same, and weights adapted to slide upon said flanges or stops and rest by gravity upon the top of the pile of sheets substantially as herein shown and described and for the purpose stated.
