KUNO'FELSCH, OF ELBERFELD, GERMANY.

DENTALFORCEPS.'

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 732,288, dated June 30, 1903.

Application filed March 3, 1902.

To all whom it may concern.-

Beit known that I, KUNo FELscH, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Elberfeld, in the Kingdom of Prussia, Germany, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dental Forceps for the Extraction of Wisdom-Teeth, of which the following is a specification.

It is well known that wisdom-teeth by reason of their shape and their location in the extreme ends of the mouth, where the interval between the jaws is narrowest, are often difficult to grasp securely by the forceps and sometimes slip therefrom into the mouth, passing thence to the windpipe or aesophagus, to the discomfort and serious danger of the patient.

The object of this invention is to make the grasp of the forceps on the teeth more secure, thereby avoiding all risk of such slipping. This I accomplish by the especial construction of the jaws hereinafter described, whereby when brought together on the wisdomtooth they effectually inclose it and thereby prevent its escape until wholly withdrawn from the mouth.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a perspective view, taken obliquely from the front, of a pair of forceps embodying my invention open. Fig. 2 represents a similar view closed. Fig. 3 represents a transverse section through the crown of the closed jaws, and Fig. 4 represents a plan view from below.

These forceps consist, as-usual, of two members, each comprising a handle A, a pivotbearing B, and an-upwardly-curved jaw with a slender stem C, the two members being connected by a pivot E. Each jaw proper, D, is

4o rounded out laterally to form a hollow cheek d and tapered forward and downward somewhat like a parrots bill, its inner face pre- Serial No. 96,399. (No model.)

senting concavity d, broadest and deepest at its rear end and tapering as above. The half shell thus formed is recessed in a semiellipse at the highest point of its inner edge and also infront and in a larger half oval underneath, the latter being the largest. Consequently when the forceps are closed, as in Figs. 2, 3, and 4., the jaws present small ellepti cal openings g and hon the top and in the front of the hollow shell which they form and a larger oval opening i underneath. These openings will permit the protrusion of roots and jutting parts of the wisdom-tooth, which otherwise would prevent closing, while the two concavities d of these jaws make a chamber suitable in size and form to receive the body of the tooth. While the jaws of the forceps are held closed on said tooth it cannot escape from said chamber and a moderate effort will extract it from its socket and remove it from the mouth without any possibility of injury.

I'Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v 1. A pair of forceps having hollow jaws for inclosing a tooth, said jaws being recessed in their edges to leave an opening in the top thereof and an opening in the bottom thereof substantially as set forth.

2. A pair of dental forceps having in each jaw a concavity d the edges of which are recessed at intervals as described, the two jaws when closed forming a chamber to receive the body of the tooth and openings g h and i substantially as set forth.

In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.V
