SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 732,077, dated June 30, 1903. Application filed September 26,1902. Serial No. 124,978. (No model.)
T0 all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, RAYMOND H. HORN- BROOK, asubject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed-Water Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to feed-water heaters having an outer and inner casing connected at their ends, which inner casing contains a series of longitudinal tubes connected with tube-plates at either end; and the objects of myiuvention are to provide a connection between one tube-plate and the outer casing which will accommodate the expansion and contraction of the tubes and also resist an excessive boiler-pressure lengthwise of the tubes and, furthermore, to provide a trap and exit for removing the scum directly from the heater. I attain these objects by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure .l is a vertical middle section of the heater; Fig. 2, a plan view of the upper tubeplate; Fig. 3, a cross-section on` line 3 3, Fig. l; Fig. 4, an enlarged section of the expansion-hoop joint, and Fig. 5 .an inverted plan View of the lower tube-plate and expansionhoop. v

The outer casing l is preferably cylindrical in form and upright in position and is provided with the water-inlet pipes 2 near the lower end and with the drain-pipe outlets 3 at the lower end, and in the lower part ofV the outer casing is the steam-inlet pipe 4, which pipe also communicates through and into the inner casing.
The inner casing 5 is preferably cylindrical in form and is located Within the outer casing, with the water-space 6 intervening, which Water-space may be free and continuous, or, as illustrated, I prefer to provide the helical partition 7, which converts the intervening space 6 into a spiral passage.
The outer and inner casings are attached at their upper ends to the upper tube-plate 8, through which plate the upper ends of the tubes 9 are also attached, and the aperture 10 is provided in the tube-plate at one side, which aperture furnishes an outlet for the water from the spiral passage 6 between the outer and inner cases.
The lower end of the inner oasingis flared outward and terminates in the annular flange 11, to which the lower end of the outer casing is attached, preferably by means of the flange 12. The drain-pipe-outletlisprovided through flange 11 to drain the inner casing when desired.
The lower tube-plate 14 is freely located in the enlarged lower end of the inner casing, through which plate the lower ends of the tubes 9 are attached. At the rim, and preferably on the lower side of the lower tubeplate, is attached the inner flange 15 of the expansion-hoop 16, the outer flange 17 of which hoop is attached to the flange l1 of the inner casing, preferably on the lower side thereof. The expansion-hoop is formed in section, with double reverse or U-shaped curves between the flanges, which permits the lower tube-plate to go and-come with the eX- pansion and contraction of the tubes under varying temperature, and thereby prevents a loosening of the respective joints by such movement.
The lugs or brackets 18 are provided in the inner casing and are so located as to form a bearing or stop for the rim of the lower tubeplate when the tubes are contracted or when the boiler-pressure acting on the lower side of this plate tends to buckle the tubes. This bearing or stop prevents such a buckling of the tubes and the consequent loosening of the joints thereby. l prefer to provide one or more ribs, as 19, to give additional stiifness to the lower tube-plate.
The lower water-chamber 2O is attached by its rim-flange 21 on' the lower side of the inner-casing flange 11, between 'which flanges the outer iiauge 17 of the expansion-hoop preferably intervenes. Iprefer to make this joint so the same bolt or rivet passes through the flanges of the outer casing, the inner cas ing, the expansion-hoop, and the lower waterchamber; but the detail of the joint can be varied Without affecting the general nature of my invention. The drain-aperture 22 is provided in the lower water-chamber to drain the chamber and the tubes.
The upper water-chamber 23 is attached on the upper tube-plate, preferably by its rimthe inlet-sections 27 and the outletsection 27?'. The inlet-section of the upper waterchamber is preferably provided with the safety-valve aperture 28, and the outlet-section of the chamber is provided with the water-outlet pipe 29, which projects down part way into the chamber, and the scum-aperture 30, which is located above the lower end of the water-outlet pipe. y
The deflector-plate 3l is provided in the outlet-section of the upper water-chamber and extends between the upper tube-plate and the water-outlet pipe from the transverse partition part way outward to the side of the chamber. The detlector-plate prevents the flow of water directly from the tubes to the Water-outlet pipe and detlects the current around and above the plate, so that the scum which thereby is permitted to accumulate on the surface of the water above the entrance 32 of the water-pipe can be blown off through the scum-aperture when desired without carrying the same through the water-outlet pipe to the boiler.
Suitable pipes and valves of ordinary types areconnected with the inlet, outlet, and drain pipes and apertures to join the heater with a pump, a boiler, `an engine, or other desired water or steam reservoir or receptacle, none of which are shown.
The drain-pipe, safety-valve, and scum-apertures being properly closed, water is forced into the outer casing through the water-inlet pipes and passes upward through the spiral passage formed bythe helical partition around the inner casing. Thence the water passes through the outletaperture in the upper tube-plate into the inlet-section of the upper water chamber, thence down through the tubes which communicate with the inlet-section of the upper water-chamber to the lower Water-chamber, thence upward through the tubes which communicate into the outlet-section of the upper water-chamber. Thence the water is deflected around the deflectorplate and upward and around the same and forms an eddy or comparatively quiet surface above the level of the lower'end of the outlet-tube, through which tube it is discharged or drawn to the boiler as fast as needed.
When it is desired to carry off the scum which forms on the surface of the water, the -scum-aperture is opened sufficiently for that purpose.
Exhaust or live steam is received into the inner casin g through the stearninlet pipe and passes upward around the tubes, thereby heating the water passing through the tubes and inthe spiral passage around the inner casing, and thence the steam passes out through the steam-outlet pipe 33, which extends from near the upper end of the inner casing outward through the outer casing.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a feed-Water heater, an outer casing,
" an inner casing, one end of the inner casing being flared and joined tothe end of the outer casing, a plate freely located in said end of the inner casing, tubes in said inner casing attached in said plate, an expansion-hoop having its inner flangejoined to the rim of said plate and its outer flange joined to the end of said inner casing, and a chamber attached by its rim on said inner casing.
2. In a feed-water heater, a casing, a plate freely located in the end of said casing, tubes in said casing attached in said plate, an eX- pansion-hoop having its inner flange joined to the rim of said ,plate and its outer flange `joined. to theend of said casing, and a chamber attached by its rim onsaid casing.
3. In a feed-water heater, a casing, a plate freely located in the end of said casing, tubes in said casing attached in said plate, and an expansion-hoop having its inner flange joined to the rim of said plate and its outer flange joined to the end of said casing, the expansionhoop being formed with double reverse or U- shaped curves between the flanges.
4:. In a feed-water heater, a casing, a plate freely located in the end of said casing, and an expansion-hoop having its inner flange joined to the rim of said plate and its outer flange joined to the end of said casing, the expansion-hoop being formed with double reverse or U shaped curves between the flanges.
5. In a feed-water heater, an outer casing, an inner casing, tubes in said inner casing, a tube-plate connecting the ends of said casings, said tubes being attached in said plate, a chamber attached on said plate, an outletpipe leading from within said chamber, a scum-aperture in said chamber above the opening of said outlet-pipe, and a deflectorplate between said tube-plate and the opening of the outlet-pipe.
