Description

' No. ra ars.
UNITED STATES Patented June 9,1903.
HARRY DIFLO, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
ATTACHMENT FOR RULERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part Letters Patent No. 730,348, dated June 9, 1903. Application filed October is, 1902.. Serial No. 127,076. (No'model-l To all whom it nut-y concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY DIFLO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadel phia, in the county or Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Rulers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an attachment for a ruler wherebythe ruler may be used as a gage, square, miter, or bevel, as the case may be, and will in either instance give entire satisfaction.
The object of this invention is to provid an attachment for an ordinary two-foot folding ruler such as is now in general use, though it may be applied with satisfactory results to any style of a ruler.
A further object of this invention is to provide an attachment for a ruler and to so construct the same that it may be easily and quickly applied or detached, also adjusted to take the place of a gage, square, miter, and bevel, one which is exceedingly cheap and simple, and will efficiently perform all of its intended functions.
With these objects in view and such others as may hereinafter appear my invention consists in the particular construction of the various parts and in the novel manner of combination and arrangement of said parts, all of which will be fully described, and specifically pointed out in the appended claims' In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a two-foot folding ruler with my attachment applied. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the attachment. Fig. 8 is a bottom plan view, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view.
Referring by letters to the drawings, A represents a slide consisting of a base-plate having corresponding right angular sides B, adapted to engage the edges of the ruler and provided with oppositely-disposed flanges C, so situated thereupon that when brought in contact with the hinge of the ruler, as shown in Fig. l, the center of the plate will be in the center of the ruler, the objectof which will be hereinafter explained. The slide maybe held in any desired position by the set-screw D, mounted in the boss E upon one of the sides B. In the center of the slide is a verticrew F, and in an annulus around this screw are arranged four quadrants, each calibrated from zero to ninety, as plainly shown in Fig. 2. Mounted upon thescreen F is a pointer G, adapted to revolve thereupon and to be locked or clamped in position by the thumb-nut H, which travels upon the screw. Formed upon this pointer is a right-angular edge I, the object of which will hereinafter appear.
I t will be readily seen that when the attachment is applied to a two-foot folding ruler and it is desired to gage aboard or other article the measurement of which is greater than five and one-half inches, upon adjusting the slide the flanges'O will be brought in contact with the hinge of the ruler, at which point it becomes necessary to reverse the ruler and the position of the pointer in order that the slide may be forced to the desired position. It will also be seen that by adjusting the pointer, hence the angular edge carried thereby, the attachment affords means whereby the ruler may be employed not only as a gage, but as a square, miter, or bevel as well, and will in either instance give entire satisfaction, owing to the manner in which it may be reversed and adjusted.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In an attachment for a ruler, a slide, a screwmounted in the center of the slide, calibrations in an annulus around the screw, a set-screw upon the side of the slide, a pointer mounted to revolve upon the screw in the center of the slide and adapted to be held in position by a thumb-nut engaging the screw, an angular edge formed at right angle to and carried by the pointer, substantially as speci- 2. In an attachment fora ruler, a slide having a set-screw upon one side thereof, an annulus upon the slide, the said annulus divided into quadrants, each quadrant calibrated from zero to ninety, a screw mounted in the center of the annulus, a pointer adapted to revolve upon the screw, a straight edge formed upon the pointer at right angles thereto, and a thumb -nut for locking the pointer and straight edge in position, substantially as specified.
HARRY DIFLO.
