PATENT ()FFICE.
ALEXANDER PORTERFIELD, OF DUMBARTON, SCOTLAND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 730,045, dated June 2, 1903.
Application filed July 26, 1902.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
, Be it known that I, AL XANDER PORTER- FIELD, a subject-of the. King of Great Britain and Ireland, and a resident of Dumbarton, in the county of Dumbarton, Scotland, (whose postal address is Cree Bank, Dumbarton, Scotland,) have invented an Improved Pump Attachment for Drilling or Boring-Machinery, (for Which'I have applied for British Patent No; 512, "dated January 8, 1902,) of which the following is 'a specification.
My said invention'h'as'for its object to provide a pump attachmentfor drilling or bor-- ing machinery, such that the power used to actuatethe tool can also be used to work the pump, and thus give a continuous supply of water, oil, or the like, which will be injected with considerable force into the hole or recess being cut by the drill.
In order that my said" invention and the manner of performing the same may be properly understood, I hereunto append a sheet of explanatory drawings, to be hereinafter referred to in describing my improvements, Figure 1 being a plan, and Fig. 2 a section, of the pump attachment, while Figs. 3 and at are elevations at right angles to each other, showing the pump in position.
As shown in the drawings, the pump attachment is made with a barrel or chamber A, having a bracket B,by which it can be secured to the casing-cover O of the tool to which the pump is to be attached; It is to be understood that the shape of the bracket B can be altered to suit the shape-of the easing of the particular tool to which the pump is to be secured. In the barrel there works a plunger D, the outer, projecting end of which has bolted to it depending links E, to which is attached one end of a spring F, the other end of which is secured to a depending bracket G, extending down from the under side of a valve-chest H, with which the pumpbarrel A communicates by an opening J. The depending links E also carry a bar or strap K, the outerend of which is carried by' a guide-rod L, fixed to the casing O, and which is so shaped that it projects into the path of a cam or eccentric M, fixed on the ro tating spindle or drill N, part of which only is shown.
In the valve-chest H there are supplyand Serial no. 117,002. (No model.)
discharge valves P Q, which may be ot' any liquid can be projected in any required direction. Two or more discharge-openin gs may be formed in the valve-chest H, toone of which the discharge, connection T may be secured,
depending on where the tool is to be used, the other or others being closed by a plug U or plugs.
WVhenthe tool is in use, the rotating cam M, acting on the outer curved end of the bar K, pulls out the plunger D against the action of the spring F, which when the cam haspassed the bar K pulls the plunger in again, the stroke of the plunger being regulated by the throw of the'cam or eccentric. The plunger D is thus reciprocated at each revolution of the cam M, actuating the valves P Q, so as to draw the liquid into the valve-chest H and eject it through the discharge connection T with considerable force into the hole or recess being drilled or bored. The lift of the Valves P Q is regulated by the inwardly-projecting stem V on the under side of the cover W of the valve-chest H.
I claim as my invention 1. A portable drilling and boring machine,
.having a drill spindle, a motor casing in which the spindle is mounted and through which the spindle passes, a pump, valves and a pump-operating means mounted on said casing and means for imparting motion from the spindle to the operating means, substantially as described.
2, A portable drilling and boring machine, having a drill-spindle, a motor-casing throughwhich the spindle passes, a cam on the spindle at one end of and without the casing, and a pump, valves I and operating-lever mounted on said casing, and adapted to be operated by the said cam, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my nameto this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
