LYMAN G. MARTIN, OF WINFIELD, 'KANSAS.
. CHURN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 728,262, dated May 19, 1903.
, Application filed December 17,1902. Serial No. 135,620. (No model.) I
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LLYMAN O. MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at'Winfield, in the county of Cowley andState of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Churns; and I do hereby ,de-
' clare the following to be a full, clear, and exsists of certain novel features of combination.
and construction of parts, the preferred form whereof will be hereinafter set forth.
The object of myinvention, among others, is to provide a churn which maybe Very cheaply constructed of any preferred and suitable material which will be found to be reliably efficient in the production'of butter with a minimum expenditure of time and labor. 7
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter-made clearly apparent, reference bein g had to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part of which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention complete ready for use. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section of the churn-bodyfi Fig. 3 is a detail view, in side elevation, of the interior chamber or reservoir.
For'convenienee the various details of my invention and accessories required to illustrate a practical application thereof to use will be referred to by numerals.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates a pair of rockers, to whichare secured a plu-- rality of standards 2,carrying at their upper.
ends theframe Sec'ti n 3, up'onwhich; my churn-body'4 is carried and sec'ured'in any preferred way, as bya band or strap 5.
The churn-body is preferably cylindrical, though other form of outline in cross-section may be adopted. In the present instance I have provided the body portion 4 at one end with the threaded neck i 6, having acap 7 adapted to fit said neck and be turned home thereon, so as to produce a non-leaking joint. The cap 7 is provided centrally with a central opening, also threaded, as indicated by the numeral 8, and adapted to fit around the this application, and in" threaded neck 9 of the interior water-reser voir 10.
The water-reservoir 10 is of sufficient length to reach throughout the-interior of the body portion 4 from end to end, the inner end of the reservoir being received by the retaining flange 11, which is secured to the inner end of the body 4, as more clearly shown in Fig.
2. The inner end of the water-reservoir 10 is of such diameter as to snugly fit in the flange 11, and said reservoir 10 is provided with the apertures 12, adapted to be brought i into or out of registration with the apertures 13, provided in the flange 1]., for a purpose hereinafter set forth. The inner end ofthe reservoir 10 is also provided with the cushioning-spring 14, adapted to bear directly against the inner face of the end of the body4, as more clearly shown in Fig. 2. It will thereforeibeseen that the flange. 11
and the threaded neck 8 will secure and reliably hold the reservoir 10 concentrically within the body 4, and the milk is therefore adapted tooccupythe annularspacethus afforded aroundthe reservoir 10, and inorder that a maximum degree of agitation may be imparted to the milk Iprovide the annular collars or flanges 15, there being any preferred number of said'flan'ges, which are fix- *t'o'rest between the cross-barsf18, and thus hold the body portion 4 from longitudinal movement when placed upon the carriage. A suitable opening 19 is also provided in the upperportion of the body section 4, said opening having the cap-section 20, as shown, whereby the contents of the churn-body 4 may be readily examined from, time to time or introduced therethrough. The cap is also provided with an opening;2l, designed as a ventilator, whereby the odors or heat from the milk may escape. The reservoir 10, as above set forth, is designed to be filled or plurality of flanges 15.
desirable to introduce water into the milk, this partly filled with Water, so as to insure that the milk will be brought to the desired temperature in order that the best results may be attained. I
By reference to the drawings it will also be seen that a faucet 22 is provided for the cap-section 7, whereby the liquid contents of the churn-body may be readily withdrawn after the butter has been produced. After the water-reservoir has been placed in position in the flange 11, so that the spring 14; will bear against the end section of the body, the cap 7 is turned home, it being understood that the water-reservoiris properly filled with the desired quantity of water or with Water and ice. The desired quantity of milk to be churned is then introduced through the opening 19 and the churn placed in position upon the carriage, when by a proper rocking movement the contents of the churn-body and the reservoir 10 may be caused to reciprocate or move from end to end of the churn, inducing great agitation of the milk by reason of the If it should become may readily be accomplished by turning the reservoir 10 so as to bring the apertures 12 and 13 into registration with each other for a proper length of time, and after the desired quantity of Water has thus been permitted to escape said reservoir may be partially rotated so as to bring said apertures out of registration, thereby closing communication between the water and milk chambers.
20, and if the churning process is found to be complete the liquid contents of the churnbody may be readily withdrawn through the faucet 22, leaving only the butter within the churn, which may be easily secured by removing the cap 7 and the water-reservoir 10.
In some instances I employ the bail 4, by which the churn-body 4 may be suspended, as from a rope or arm reaching down from the ceiling, as will be understood, and the same rocking reciprocating motion may thus be readily imparted to the contents of the churn-body.
Believing that the advantages and manner of using my improved churn have thus been made clearly apparent, further description is deemed unnecessary.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described churn, comprising a suitable milk-reservoir, or body portion 4:; a rocking support for said body portion; a suitable cap provided at one end of said body portion and a cup-like flange 11 at the opposite end, in combination with awater-reservoir 10, the inner end of which is adapted to be received by said flange while the outer end is secured by said cap, thereby disposing the Water-reservoir concentrically in the churnbody, said water-reservoir having a plurality of radially-disposed agitating-flanges l5 and a cushioning-spring 14, all combined substantially as specified and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
