PATENT OFFICE.
FLESH-RUBBER.
SPECIFXGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 728,159, dated May 12, 1903. Application filed February 12, 1903. Serial No. 143,094. (No model.)`
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER R. BURKART,
a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invent? ed a new and useful Flesh-Rubber, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in flesh-rubbers; and its object is to provide a iiesh-rubbing device capable of imparting a warming exhilarating sensation caused by friction produced by the movements neces-Y and adjustably secured to a stiening-bau Fig. 3 is a side view of the stiffening-bar,
showingin detail the bar,the fastening-studs, and the handle; and Fig. 4 is a view of an enlarged section of my improved flesh-rubber, showing the plan of weaving the twisted strands of animal hair of which it is composed.
Similar iigures of reference indicate simi-r lar parts throughout the several views.
1 represents my impro ved Iiesh-rubber,con sisting of the twisted and loosely woven strands of animal hair provided with' the handholds 2 as secured at each end thereof.
3 represents the eyelet-holes, also formed near each end of the flesh-rubber.
4 represents the stiffening-bar,'which may be of rubber, wood, metal, or other suitable material, having the handle 5 at one end and the double-headed stud 6 passed through the stiening-bar near its handle.
7 and S represent the warp and the Woof, respectively, as it appears in the twisted and loosely-woven strands of animal hair which constitute my improved iiesh-rubber.
It will be noticed that a iiesh-rubber constructed as hereinabove described when in use and being drawn about the user readily stretches and relaxes or coils and recoils the twisted strands by reason of the reciprocating vibratin g motion necessarily imparted by the operation, thus producing in a slight degree by reason of the friction of the animal hair an organic electrical effect which animates and rejuvinates the dormant inactive tissue as accomplished by the usual massage method of treatment.
As animal hair and no wool is used in the make-up of the device, it isantiseptic, nonabsorbent, and thoroughly effective whether used in a dry or Wet state, its tendency being to dry and warm the body by rubbing and wiping the pores in the former instance and Where used in awet state to scour or thoroughly brush and cleansethe cuticle preparatory to the use of the final drying-towel.
It will be observed that my improved fleshrubber embodies elements of cheapness, durability, and usefulness.
Havingthus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a iiesh-rubber, a series of twisted and wovenstrands of animal hair, having a holdin g device consisting of a cord-loop threaded through each end of said fabric, substantially as set forth and described.
2. In a iesh-rubber, a series of twisted and Woven strands of animal hair terminating with hand-loops and having an eyelet near each end for adj ustably securing it when mounted upon asuitable holder, substantially as shown and set forth.
OLIVER R. BURKART.
