To wZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EMIL DI'J'HRING, a sub- .ject of the'Kiug of Prussia, German Emperor,
residing at No. 106 Alt-Moabit, Berlin, in the Kingdom of Prussia,German Empire, have'invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Forming Tablets, &c., (for which I have made application for Letters Patent in Germany, Serial No. D.11,495, dated April 25, 1901,) of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention relates to an improved apparatus for pressing tablets, lozenges, and similar articles from pulverized or granular matter.
The object of my invention is toprovide an apparatus of this class by which not'only a larger quantity of tablets and the like may the molds or matrices into which the said plungers enter for compressing the matter therein contained are of different sizes corresponding to the two plungers.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional front elevation of the apparatus, and Fig. 2 a cross-section of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical section at right angles to Fig. 1.
Motion may be imparted to the apparatus either by a hand-wheel s or by suitable mechanical means. The driving-shaft a of the wheel or pulley s transmits motion by a suitable gearing to another shaft b, carrying two eccentrics, which in a known manner reciprocate the plungers cand'd in a vertical direction. Opposite t0 the dies carried by said plungers c and (1 corresponding molds or matrices are' provided within the working table e to receive the matter to be compressed and the dies to compress the same. The capacity of the said matrices is determined and adjustable by means of adjustable cores 7', which may be raised or lowered, as desired, in a,
known manner. The upward throw of said cores also serves to discharge the tablet from The two plungers maybe of the same or of difierent size, and in the latter case the matrix after every compression, as known in apparatus of the kind. In the drawings the left-hand plunger, as an example, has three compressing-dies to which correspond three matrices, While the right-hand plunger 0, as an example, has only a single die.
The powdered or granular matter to be compressed into tablets, lozenges, or the like Withinthe matrices is contained Within two hoppers f, discharging each into a distributingchamber g of a larger size. The two chambers g separate from each other are connected :to a common sleeve or collar 2', turning on a central shaft h. Rocking motion is imparted to the hoppers and chambers f and g by means of a connecting-rod 7c and pivoted lever 01, one end of which engages a cam-slot m, mounted on the shaft 1). Owing to said oscillating or rocking motion of the hoppersf and chambers g, the open lower end of each of the said chambers alternately slides over the corresponding matrix and leaves the same free for the die to enter into the same as the plunger descends. The position shown in Fig.2 represents the matrices covered by the chambers g, from which the matter to be compressed enters into the matrices. When the chambers g have been swung free from the said matrices, the latter are uncovered and the plungers pass down between the two hoppers f and chambers g to compress the matter within the matrices. The cam-slot controlling the throw of the levern and connectingrod is is'so arranged to keep the hoppers and chambers g in their position free from the matrices for a sufficient length of time to allow the plungers c and d to move down and rise again. When the dies of the plungers c and d recede from the matrices, the cores 1' are raised by the lever 19 and the tablets delivered to the surface of the working table e, from which the sides of the chambers 9 will sweep them off into discharging-guideways 0 on their next oscillating. motion 'As the plungers descend and compress the matter in the matrices after every oscillation of the hoppers and distributing-chambers in either direction it will be seen that the quantity of tablets producedis very c0nsiderable,and the two plungers may at the same time produce tablets of different matter and of different size.
I claim as my invention 1. In an apparatus of the character described, matrices carried by a support, plungers carrying dies conforming to the matrices, distributing means mounted in juxtaposition to the matrices and adapted to supply the matter to be compressed, and means for imparting reciprocating movement to the plungers and a relative oscillating movement to the matrices and distributing means.
2. In an apparatus of the character described, matrices carried by a stationary support, vertically-reciprocating plungers carrying dies conformingto the matrices, distributing means consisting of chambers mounted above the support and having a perforated bottom adapted to be brought by oscillatory motion into registry with the corresponding matrices, and means for alternately discharging the contents of the chambers into the matrices and causing the descent of the plungers.
3. In an apparatus of the character described, a plurality of matrices carried by a support, vertically reciprocating plungers carrying dies conforming to the matrices, distributing means mounted foroscillatory movement concentric of the matrices and adapted to supply the matter to be compressed, and means for imparting vertical movement to the plungers and oscillatory movementto the distributing means.
4. In an apparatus of the character described, a plurality of matrices carried by a stationary support, vertically-reciprocating plungers carrying dies conforming to the matrices, distributing means consisting of chambers mounted concentrically of and above the support and having a perforate bottom adapted to be brought by oscillatory motion into registry with the corresponding matrix,means for alternately discharging the contents of the chambers into the matrices and causing the descent of the plungers.
5. In an apparatus of the character described, matrices, plungers carrying dies conforming to the matrices, distributing-chambers simultaneously oscillating about a common shaft and so located relative to each other as to permit the plungers to pass between them.
6. In an apparatus of the character described, matrices carried by a stationary support, plungers carrying dies conforming to the matrices and in alinement therewith, distributing-chambers mounted concentrically of the support upon a common shaft and adapted for oscillating movement in alternate directions in such manner as to charge the matrices with the material to be compressed and then to recede and permit the plungers to descend.
7. In an apparatus of the character described, matrices carried by a stationary support and having a movable bottom, verticallyreciprocating plungers mounted in alinement with the matrices and carrying dies conforming thereto, distributing means consisting of a plurality of chambers having perforate bottoms and mounted for oscillatory movement about a common shaft and so disposed relative to the matrices as to alternately cover and uncover the same, means for reciprocating the plungers and oscillating the chambers in such manner that the chambers will discharge their contents into the matrices While the plungers are elevated and will uncover the matrices as the plungers descend, and means for actuating the movable bottoms of the matrices to discharge the compressed material therefrom.
8. In an apparatus of the character described, a stationary support carrying a plurality of dissimilar matrices having movable bottoms, vertically-reciprocating plungers in alinement with and carrying dies conforming to the matrices, an oscillatory distributingchamber for each matrix, the several chambers being mounted upon a common shaft in such manner as to alternately discharge their contents into their respective matrices and then to withdraw permitting the plungers to descend and compress the matter within the matrices, means for actuating the plungers and the oscillatory distributing-chambers and means for actuating the movable bottoms of the matrices to eject the compressed matter therefrom.
