SPLIT COLLAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 727,707, dated May 12, 1903 Application filed July 22, 1902- Serial No. 16,502. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY W. STAUFFER, residing in the city of Reading, and AUSTIN H. RIEGNER, residing at Mohns Store, in the county of Berks, State of Pennsylvania, citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Split Collars, of which the following is a specification.
Our invent-ion relates particularly to split collars for shafting; and our main object is to provide asimple construction consisting of similar sections adapted to be conveniently interlocked upon the shaft in such manner as to insure their being held rigidly in line thereon.
The invention is fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the novel features are specifically pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the similar united sections. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the two sections separated in position to be closed together upon the shaftlng.
The two half-ring sections shown are alike in form, being simply reversed in position upon the shaft, with each section encircling one-half thereof and abutting against the other at a a upon the diametral line (1 d.
To provide for interlocking and securing the sections together upon the shafting, we form the abutting portions of each with diiferently-shaped overlapping extensions, whereby the two sections are adapted to engage each other, as shown. sions 1) forms a continuation ofthe peripheral portion of the collar'and overhangs the abutting portion of the reversely-set opposing sec-' tion, while the other extension 0 of each section is adapted to interlock interiorly with the opposing section by extending beyond the diametral line at 01 into a receiving-recess e therefor, formed between the abutting ends of the flanges f f, the curved'inner faces of which-latter encircle the shafting. The two sections of the collar when thus engaged are One of these extenfirmly held sidewise, so as to prevent their getting out of line, and they are rigidly secured together andto the shafting by means of opposite set-screws g g, passing radially through the respective overlapping exten sions b c in the abutting plane d d and forcibly seated againstthe surface of the shafting. To prevent any projection of the heads of 5 5 these screws above thesurface of the collar, a peripheral recess h is provided therefor in each section.
In the construction shown the flanges f f form between their laterally-spaced ends I within the overlapping extension I) the engaging recess 9 for the underlapping extension 0 of the opposing section, the flattened exterior portion is of which latter is covered by said extension b.
The sections of our improved collar, it will be seen, are simply and cheaply formed, may be secured to the most limited space upon the shafting, no endwise movement being required, and are secured together in positive alinement and to the shafting in a simple and effective manner.
What we claim is- I A shaft-collarmade up of two similar halfring sections abutting on a diametral line, the abutting portions of each section being provided with an overlapping extension b and laterally-spaced flanges f on one side of the shaft, and with an underlapping extension 0 on the opposite side thereof, said underlap- 8o ping extension of eachsection being engaged between the spaced flanges of the reverselyset opposing section; and radial unitingscrews entering alined openings in each pair of lapping extensions substantially as set forth. h
