PATENT OFFICE.-
CHARLES C. ROBERTS, OF ANSONIA, CONNECTICUT.
DRIVER FOR DRILL-SOCKETS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 727,450, dated May 5, 1903.
Application filed August 11, 1902. Serial No. 119,348. (No model.)
to a drill-socket and which when in working position firmly holds the drill in place.
Ordinarily friction between the drill and its socket is depended upon to drive the former, and when there is much of a strain on the drill the latter turns in its socket, and
thereby tears the tail off the drill and also With mydriver, however,
spoils the socket. these difficulties are Wholly overcome. Said driver in the present case is in the form of a sleeve to fit the forward end of the drill-socket, and said sleeve has a projecting portion which extends beyond said forward end, provided with inwardly-projecting fingers adapted to enter the twist of the drill. Said sleeve is adapted to be threaded onto the drill-socket, and when the sleeve is in place, with the fingers thereon in the twist of the drill, it will be evident that not only is the drill properly secured in place, but should the same turn it will be drawn farther into the socket by the driver. By virtue of the latter I am enabled to employ drills which have been discarded after injury in the use in the ordinary way to which I have alluded.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of'a drillchuck and drill and driver, showing the manner of using the latter. Fig. 2 is aside elevation'of the driver. Fig. 3 is a face view of the same.
Like characters refer to like parts in allplements are of the kind 'in common use in metal-work. The forward end of the drillsocke-t is externally threaded, as at 7, to receive corresponding threads upon the inside of the driver 8, which, it will be seen, is in the form of a sleeve or ring. The said driver 8 has upon its periphery, at diametrically 0pposite sides thereof, the flat faces 9 to receive the jaws ofa wrench to thereby facilitate the application of the driver to the socket. The sleeve therefore presents a polygonal periphery.
The driver 8 has fixed projections 10, which extend forwardly beyond the forward end of the drill-socket and terminate in inwardlyextending fingers 11. These fingers 11 are adapted to engage in the twist or groove of son of the screw-threaded connection between the last-mentioned parts the driver will be moved farther onto the socket, and thereby draw the drill into the socket proper, so that neither the drill nor the socket can be injored.
By means of the driver I can employ drills that have been discarded as useless after injury in the old way of operating the same.
The driver may be made of any suitable material and need not be of the exact construction hereinbefore described in detail, for as to this point it may be varied within the scope of my claims.
I usually make the sleeve 8 and the projections 10 and fingers '11 integral; but this, of course, is not essential.
Having described the invention, I claim 1. A driver for 'a drill-socket consisting of a sleeve adapted to surround said drill-socket and having a fixed portion adapted to project beyond said drill-socket and said projecting fixed portion having inwardly-disposed fingers adapted to enter the twist or groove of a drill.
2. A driver for a drill'socket consisting of an internally-threaded sleeve, the threads of which are adapted to engage corresponding threads upon the exterior of said drill-socket IO yond said drill-socket and said projecting portion having inwardly-disposed fingers adapted to enter the twist or groove of a drill, and
said sleeve having a polygonal periphery.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit- 15 nesses.
