TYPE-CONTROLLING DEVICE FOR TYPE-CASTING MACHINES.
SPECIElCATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 727,046, dated May 5, 1903.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK W1oKs, a
citizen of Great Britain, and a resident of l'IalfwayLodge, Esher, county of Surrey, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Controlling Devices for Type-Casting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in a device for re ceiving and controlling the type which are madeby my rotary type-molding machine. At the point of delivery, where the type leave the machine, they have to be lifted off of the chain into which they have been delivered by the mold-wheel and carried into a raceway, and as they enter this raceway it is important that they shall be firmly held in position, so that they will not turn overor become displaced.
The invention consists in a weight which is pivoted at one end and has its free end lying in the direction toward which the line of type is moving and means for adjusting this weight so as to enable it to exert a desired pressure upon the top of the type in combination with another Weight, which is pivoted at one end, the free end lying in the direction opposite to that in which the type are traveling, the two free ends of the weights lying opposite to one another and in close proximity to one another and a distance apart less than the width of a type-body, so that tion witha raceway of a weight pivoted at before the type leaves thefirstof the members of the combination it is engaged by the second one.
Referring-to the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the device as it is located upon the side ofthe machine. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the device'in its location in practice. Fig. 3 is a plan of the same, and Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are the details of the construction detached from their relation.
1 is the chain by which the type 2 2 are carried. The chain'l .1 is composed of a series of stationary and a series of movable segments, which are described in'my Patent No. 618,926, of February 7, 1899. The segments 3 3 being the movable segments when up, as shown in the position of Fig. 2, carry the type until they come under the pivoted block or weight 4. The block 4 is pivoted in a posivided upon one side with a set-screw 5, by which its relation to the top of the type may be predetermined. It is desirable that it should barely touch without pressure upon the top of the type and yet be free to rise and fall. At the instant atwhich the type pass under the block 4 the movable sections of the chain are forced downward by a cam 6. In the meantime, however, the type 2 has ridden up upon the raceway 7 and is held between the top of the raceway and the under side of the weight 4. There it will rest, with no power exerted upon it to propel it forward,until the next type comes along,which will be carried onto the end of the raceway 7 by the chain and in so doing will push forward the type which are in front of. it. The carrying-segments 3 3 will then drop and leave it there, and the same operation Will be repeated with the next type. As the type moves forward on the raceway under the weight 4 it will finally reach the end of the weight 4, and before it leaves the end of the weight 4 it will come under the free end of the plate 8, which is loosely pivoted at 9 on the top of the raceway and lies flat npon the sides of-the type in the raceway.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,-is v w 1. In a type-making machine, the combinaone end above the raceway, and a guide-plate pivoted at one end above the raceway and having the other end resting freely upon the type in the raceway.
2. In a type-making machine, the combination of a raceway with a weight supported above the raceway, and provided with means for adjusting wits elevation, and a guide-plate supported at one end above the raceway, and having the other end resting freely upon the type in the raceway, substantially as described.

In a type-making machine, the combination with a raceway of a weight pivoted at one end above the raceway and having the other end supported a desired distance above the type in the raceway, a guide-plate supported at one end above the raceway and having the other end in position to rest upon the type in the raceway, the free ends of the weight and guide-plate being opposite to one another and separated by a distance less than the width of a type.
