Description
2 P-ATENTED MAY 5, 1903." G. o. SCOTT. AMALGAMATING DEVICE.
Arrmourox 1-11.21: JULY 11, 1901 ATTORNEY 66/12111 BY a v WITNESSES:
UNITED STATES Patented May 5, 1903.
GERARD C. SCOTT, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
AMALGAMATING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 726,997, dated May 5, 1903.
Application filed July 11, 1901.
My invention relates to the improvement of amalgamating devices; and the'objects of my invention are to provide improved means for subjecting ore-pulp to the action of mercurially-treated amalgamating material; and to this end my invention consists in ,certain details hereinafter set, forth. Theseobjects I accomplish in the manner-illustrated; in the accompanying drawings, iniwhich Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of my improved amalgamating device, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout both views.
In carrying out my invention-I;employ an elongated receptacle 1, whichis provided in its upper portion and at one end with an inlet 2 and at its opposite end with an outlet 3. The receptacle 1 is suitably mounted or supported and has rising from its opposite sides and adjacent to its endsstandards 4, the upper ends of these standards being provided with suitable keepers 5. In the bottom and preferably near the center of the length of the receptaclel I provide a transverse well or offset 6, which-is incased by a jacket 7, the latter having a steam inlet 8 and outlet 9.
10 represents the parallel side bars-0f a horizontally-movable frame, said side bars being supported loosely in the standardkeepers 5. Journaled between the side bars 10 of said sliding frame at desirable intervals are shafts or rollers 1'1,'each 'of" these rollers being .provided at one end with a crank extension 12 or other suitable means for aiding inimparting rotary motion thereto. Suspended from each of these rollers or shafts by means of cords 13 is a transverse amalgamating case or receptacle 14,"which is formed of suitable open -work..-* Although each of these amalgamating devices is shown as in the form of an open-work casing provided with an internal filling 15, of amalgaserial No. 67,857. (No model.)
mating substance, it is obvious that I might employ in place of said casing a desirable form or character of amalgamating-body.
The Well or offset 6 is designed to be filled or partially filled with mercury, which is kept at the proper temperature by steam contained within the jacket 7. The operation of successively dipping the amalgamatingbodies 14 15 into the mercury-well consists in sliding the frame-bars l0 longitudinally until one of said amalgamating-bodies is in a position immediately over the Well 6, from which position it may bellowered into the body of mercury contained in said well. This being accomplished, the amalgamatingbody is' by. rotatingthe supporting-shaft thereof drawn upward within the body of the vessel 1, the frame again; moved longitudinally, and the'process of dipping imparted to the'next succcceding amalgamating-body. During this process the ore-pulp is introduced through the inlet or. hopper 2 into the vessel 1, through which it will flow to the outlet 3, the ore-pulp thus being subjected in its passage through said vessel and through the amalgamating devices to the amalgamating action of the latter and the tailings discharged at the outlet 3. The immersion of the amalgamating-bodies within the mercury results in imparting a mercury coating to said bodies, which. when brought into contact with the ore aids'in'the usual manner in separatingthe pure metal from the ore-pulp. Owing to'the comparatively high specific gravity of the mercury and the resultant difficulty in causing the amalgamating-bodies to descend by gravity-into the'mercury, suitable means may be employed to force said amalgamator-bodies intothe mercury. By this operation it will be understood that the amalgamating devices are successively dipped into the mercury and elevated into position to contact with theore-pulp, thus insuring the subjection of said pulp to the action oflamalga mating-bodies and'in'suring a separatiofi of the precious metals from the ore. V Having now fully described my invention,- what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-' In an amalgamator, the combination with an ere-pnlp-receiving vessel having an offset or well in its lower side adapted to contain a body of mercury, of amalgamaLing-bodies contained within said vessel, a, movable support for said amalgamating-bodies above the vessel and means connected with said support for raising and lowering said amalgamating-bodies independently, substantially as specified.
GERARD O. SCOTT.
