J. o. MANN.. l DEVICE FOR QLEANING THB rCLoTHs OD'BOLTING SIEVES.
APBLIDATION FILED rma. 3.1903. No MODEL..
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN C. MANN, OF BIGCOVE TANNERY, PENNSYLVANIA.
DEVICE FOR CLEANING THE CLOTHS OF BOLTlNG-SIEVES.
SPECIFICATION- forming part of Letters Patent No. 726.319, dated April 28, 1.903.
Application led February 3, 1903. Serial No. 141,719. (No model.)
Be it known that I, JOHN C. MANN. a citizen of the United States, residing at Bigcove Tannery, in the county of Fulton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Cleaningr the Cloths of Bolting-Sieves; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inven tion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the let.- ters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Thisinventiou relates to new and useful improvements in apparatus for cleaning shaking-screens; and it consists in the provision of a rotatable shaft, which is mounted upon balls or rollers which are supported upon suitable tracks underneath the screen and having wings, projections, or other attachments to the shaft, which are caused to be thrown by centrifugal force against the under surface of the screen as the screen-frame is given a lateral or gyratory movement, causing the attachmeuts to the shaft to be thrown against the under surface of the screen to clear the same of accumulation of iiour thereon.
The invention consists, further, in various details of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and then specifically dened in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which drawings similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the views, in which- Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of a sievebox and sieve, showing mounted therein my improved means for clearing the bottom of the sieve. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View through the sieve-box, showing the balls with the shaft secured thereto and the projections or wings upon the shaft for engagement with the bottom of the sieve; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail of the shaft removed from the sieve.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a screenbox of a honing-machine, which may be of any construction and mounted in any suitable manner to have a lateral or gyrating movement.
B designates the screen, which is tted in the frame of the box, and underneath the screen, at any sui-table locations, are mounted the tracks, comprising the rods C, which are spaced apart., said rods adapted to be passed through the blocks C', fastened to the inner walls of the screenframe, said blocks being recessed out at C2 to allow the balls to roll from one side to the other ofthe screen-frame. Said rods are adapted to form means for guiding the balls D backward and forward as the screen is given a lateral or gyrating movement. Said balls D are secured to the ends of the shaft E, there being two sets of bars forming two tracks, one at each end of the screenbox. Said balls are made, preferably, of rubber, or, if desired, may be made of any other suitable material, and fastened to the shaft are a series of wings E', which may be of felt or other material, and, if desired, brushes or chains may be attached to the shaft, and, in fact, any material which will be thrown against theunder surface of the screen as the shaft rotates and provided for the purpose of clearing the screenof the accumulation of flour, which would have a. tendency to hinder the bolting process. In order to take up the jar incident to the balls coming in contact with the inner walls of the box on the opposite side, it is my purpose to provide springs (not shown) against which the balls may contact to break the force thereof as the frame is given a lateral or gyrating movement.
From the foregoing it will be observed that by the provision ofan apparatus embodying the features of my invention a screen may be kept thoroughly clean, and rollers to which the shaft is connected may be utilized, if desired, instead of balls, the essential feature being the provision of means whereby a shaft carrying suitable Wings or brushes may be caused to contact with the surface of the screen as the same is given a lateral movement, and it will be understood that I may make alterations in the detailed construction of the apparatus without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Correction in Letters Patent No. 726,319.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A screen-cleaning apparatuscomprising in combination with a screen, rods spaced apart and positioned between the sides of the screen-forming tracks, balls mounted on said rods, a shaft to which said balls are connected and adapted to rotate therewith, and lateral wings projecting from the shaft and adapted to brush against the under surface of the screen as the frame thereof is given a lateral or gyratory movement, as set forth.
2. An apparatus for cleaning;r screens or sieves comprising in combination with the frame of the screen, rods fastened to the inner faces of the screen-frame, recessed blocks through which the ends of said rods pass, balls supported upon and guided by said rods, a shaft to which said balls are fastened, and laterally projecting;r wings upon the shaft [BEAL] screen as the shaft is given a lateral or gyra-A tory movement, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
