V Be it known that I, FRANK L. HARMON, of Beverly, in the county of Essex and Com monwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new andusefnl Skiving-Machine, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The machine which is the subject of this invention is designed for skiving o'r beveling pieces of leather near their edges, so that a folded edge may be formed; by folding the skived part. I
A machine for skiving or beve'ling the edges of leather for this purpose has been in universal use. In order to show the difierence between this machine, which is old, and the machine which is alleged to be new, I name some devices employed in the former which are not employed in the latter. Said old machine contains the following devices: an overhanging arm directly in the Way and in the light of an operator, under which arm the leather is moved in practice, and a mechanism com prising four shafts and six gears,some ofwhich are made as hard as any known material and process will admit to alleviate in some degree the wear occasioned on account a of their speed and some of which are made of rawhide to'insure some degree of quietness; but the fact that the machine disclosed in this application has only one shaft and no overhanging arm and no worms, worm-wheels, or gears and that it can be built for less than half of the cost of making any other machine made heretofore for the purpose is proof that the machine is new and useful.
It is obvious that a machine'which does not contain the above-named parts of the machine;
which is old cannot be regardedas a mere improvement upon such a machine, but is in itself a new and. distincttype of machine; because the scheme arrangement and construction of the machine shown and described in my application, resulting in a machine with only one shaft instead of four and with no gears instead of six gears and having no overhanging arm instead of one directly in the way and in the lightof an operator, isindependent of the scheme arrangement and construction of the oldmachine referred to, wherein it is absolutely necessary to use them.
The whole construction of thismaohine will be. hereinafter set forth, and shown in the drawings, and these and many other novel features will hereinafter appear and will be claimed in the claims appended hereto.

When the cutting edge of the rotatory disk skiving-knife A is worn away, so that it is out of proper relative position with the feedroll C, the stud 0 may be loosened and adjusted by hand in the slot shown in the lever D in Fig. 13 in such a mauneras to place said feed-roll G into proper relative position with the'cutting edge'of said rotatory disk skiv- Fig. 14: shows a portion of the post- C shown in Figs. 1', 2, and 3.
