- srEcIFlcATIoN Aforming part of Letters' Patent No. raoneaeatd April-21, 1903:V
` Application ined my 9,1902. stanno. 114,926. (Nomina T0 a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that'I, WILLIAM E. BENSON, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Kan-l sas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writer Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. Y Y
yMy invention relates to improvements in card or card guides or holders for type-writing machines; and the object of the invention is'to provide a simple and efficient device whereby st'ripsrof cardboard, paper, or other material-of varying widths may be written upon by the type.
I have illustrated my invention as adapted especially to the Underwood type-writer; but it is obvious that the device may with slight changes in the mode of attachment be applied to the Smith Premier and any other type-writing machine wherein its application may be found desirable.
The essence of the invention resides in the novel and peculiar combination and arrangement of parts, including their construction, as will be more fully described in the following specification and particularly pointed out by the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, representing the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a front elevation of an Underwood type-Writer with my device applied thereto.v Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my device detached from the type-writer. Fig.
3 is a cross-section of the card-holder, on the line @om of Fig. l, the card-holder detached from its supporting-bar. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the card-holder, taken Lthrough the line Z z.
In carrying out my invention I provide a rod 1 suitably secured in position near the cylinder lroll or platen 2 of a type-writer 3. From the rod is adapted to be suspended a cardholder 4, preferably constituted of spring metal. This card-holder consists of an inverted-U-shaped or trough-like piece, which is adapted to be hooked or sprung over the rod l and has its rear edge at each end provided with a depending leg 6. One of said legs is provided on its edge which faces the opposite leg with a recess 10 to receive one end of a card or slip to be supported between said legs. The other leg is also provided at its lower end with a recess 14, which cuts away the inner forwardcorner to receive the opposite end of the card, which is adapted to be held therein by a spring 13, which is secured, preferably, to the central portion of sadlegs and extends down over that portion of the recess 14 in the front of the leg.
To facilitate the attachment of the card- `holder to the rod l, the forward edge of said card-.holder is flared outwardly, and to insure the placing of the card-holder on the rod it is provided with a pin 8, adapted to pass through a hole or openingin the U-shaped or trough-likepiece of the card-holder.
In'using my card-holder it is vfirst preferably removed'from the `machine and the card or slip to be printed upon secured in position between the legs by placing one end in the recess 10 and passingthe other end in between the spring 13 and the leg until it falls into the recess 14. Then the card-holder is placed in position by hooking the U-shaped or trough-like piece over the rod 1. The parts are so arranged that the' card or slip in the holder will be brought into such a position with relation to the platen that the type of the machine will print thereon. When the card or slip has the desired mattei' printed upon its face, the holder is preferably removed'and the slip or card taken therefrom. This operation is repeated until the number of printed cards or slips desired is obtained.
I do not wish to limit myself to the details vof"constructior'1 andai-rangement of parts herein shown and described, as I am fully aware thatchanges may be made therein without in any way departing fron the spirit of my invention and the same remainintact so protected. 'v
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. 'In a device of the character described, the combination of a rod and a card-holder comprising a substantially inverted U- shaped piece, adapted to be hooked upon said rod, and legs depending from said U-shaped IOO piece and provided with means for holding a card.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a rod provided with a pin and a card-holder comprising a substantially inverted- U -shaped piece, adapted to be hooked over said rod, provided with a hole through which said pin is adapted to pass, and legs, each provided with means for supporting the end of a card.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of a rod and a card-holder comprising a substantially inverted U- shaped piece adapted to be hooked over said rod, having its forward edge ared outwardly and its rear odge provided with depending
