MOTOR-PUMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent'No. 725,813, dated April 21, 1903.
Application filed December 17, 1901. Serial No. 86,189. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DONAT Bl'xNKnprofessor, asubject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Budapest, in the Empire of Austria-Hungary, have invented new and useful Improvements Relating to Motor-Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to such a combination of pump with its motor in which the piston of the pump serves also as piston for the motor. This arrangement affords a greater simplieity of theconstruction,reduction of weight, and of space necessary, and, finally, the liq uid to be pumped may be used also for an etficient cooling of the motor-cylinder.
Several forms of performance of my invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawpump-cylinder, said motor-cylinder being of ings.
Figure 1 is a horizontal pump for low-forcing heads. Fig. 2 is a vertical pump for high-forcing heads. Fig. 3 is a horizontal pump with a fiat bucket-piston.
The fly-wheel 4 is connected by means 'of crank mechanism to the combined motor and pump piston 1. 5 and 6 are the inlet and outlet valves for the motor fluid, while 7 and 8 are the suction delivery valves, respectively, of the liquid to be pumped;
If the motor is an explosion or combustion motor and the liquid to be pumped is sufficiently cold, the pump-cylinder 9 (see Figs. 1 and 3) may be extended, so as to inclose the motor-cylinder 10, so that the liquid pass ing through the pump will cool the motor. If, however, the liquid to be pumped is warm, the pump-cylinder 9 and the jacket 11 of the motor cylinder 10 must be separated, as
shown in Fig. 2. The same is the case when the motor is a steam-engine.
In the constructions illustrated by Figs. 1 and 3 the engine-cylinder has a cooling-jacket which is in communication with and practically fornis a part of the pump-cylinder, so that the liquid in the pump-cylinder partly surrounds the engine-cylinder and cools the same. Preferably, as shown, the engine-cylinder is located partly within the pump-cylinder and projects into the same with its open end through which the piston moves.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination of the pump-cylinder having a closed end, the motor-cylinder having an open end projecting into the pumpcylinder and facing the closed end of said a smaller diameter than the pump-cylinder so as to be surrounded by a jacket which forms part' ofthe pump-cylinder, and a piston arranged to move in the motor-cylinder and to project therefrom into the pump-cylinder.
2. The combination with the pump-cylinder closed at both ends, of the motor-cylinder arranged within the pump-cylinder and opening into the same at one end, and a piston arranged to move in the motor-cylinder and to project from the open end thereof into the pump-cylinder.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
